WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release) — AIPAC has praised the bipartisan group of 367 members of the House who sent a letter to President Obama underscoring key conditions for a nuclear agreement with Iran. The letter was initiated by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-California) and Ranking Democrat Eliot Engel (D-New York).
The letter indicates that “a final comprehensive nuclear agreement must constrain Iran’s nuclear infrastructure so that Iran has no pathway to a bomb, and that agreement must be long-lasting.” It further notes that Tehran has failed to reveal its past bomb work and that unless there is a full understanding of Iran’s prior nuclear-related military activity, “it will be impossible for the international community to judge Iran’s future breakout time with certainty.”
In addition, the representatives note that “Iran’s record of clandestine activity and intransigence prevents any trust in Iran.” Given this deception, the letter states that verifiable restraints on Iran’s nuclear program must last for decades. Moreover, P5+1 negotiators “must obtain maximum commitments to transparency by Iran,” including short-notice access to suspect facilities.
Finally, the letter points out the congressional role in the implementation of any agreement with Iran. It states, “should an agreement with Iran be reached, permanent sanctions relief from congressionally-mandated sanctions would require new legislation. In reviewing such an agreement, Congress must be convinced that its terms foreclose any pathway to a bomb, and only then will Congress be able to consider permanent sanctions relief.”
