School is almost over—just feel it all around. Graduation, Confirmation – then all are vacation bound.
Walking away with top honors at San Diego High School are Shirley Samuels as A.S.B. Vice President and Henriette Faguet, Vice-President of the Junior class. Congrats.
A welcome home was held for Bruce Fisher at the Kona Kai Club with dinner and dancing. Helping surprise Bruce were all his friends.
Bev Kitaen celebrated her birthday with a lovely dinner given by Gail Kahn. A good time was had by all.
Janice Klaskin celebrated her 16th birthday with dinner and dancing at the Kona Kai Club. Helping make the evening complete were Henrietta Faguet n’ Stan Breitbard, Helene Kaufman n’ Bob Meyers, Linda Douglas n’ Noel Fishman, Lucy Recht n’ Stan Camiel, Barbara Silverman n’ Buddy Kader, Glenda Pollack n’ Phil Kaplan, Brenda Heiman n’ Roger Brenes, Roxanne Stein, Judy Smoller, Harriet Silverman and their dates. Gary Cantor was Janice’s date.
Confirmation is something to look forward to. The Confirmants of Temple Beth Israel can state this as a fact. Besides the lovely ceremony, they enjoyed a wonderful evening of swimming and dancing at the homes of Alan Friedman and Preston Martin. US)-JWB Awards Night June 23 at Temple

The annual USO-Jewish Welfare Board awards night, honoring the men, women and organizations of the Jewish Community of San Diego for their manifold services to the armed forces of the United States, will be held on Wednesday, June 23rd, at 8 p.m. at Temple Beth Israel, it was announced by Henry Weinberger, USO-JWB chairman.
Awards will be presented to some 20 organizations, high military officials and nearly 100 individuals for outstanding service in the area of military morale during the past year. Two secret awards will be made to individuals who have given services “above and beyond the call of duty.”
A smashing floor show of top Hollywood talent will follow the presentation of awards. Having traveled thousands of miles entertaining service personnel in all corners of the world, the group of fourteen USO-JWB troupers will present “New Faces of 1954” A special preview of the troupe’s four-part Afro-Cubano act, which goes into the Mocambo shortly, will be presented. Dancing and refreshments will follow. The entire evening is open to the public.

Co-operative Nursery Project of Center

A night at the Old Globe Theater Tuesday, June 1, was sponsored by the Co-operative Nursery School of the Jewish Community Center as a fundraising project.
Two hundred parents and guests were delighted by the presentation of “Lo and Behold.” It was a most successful affair, announced Mrs. Milton Schwartz, Mother’s Club President.
The Co-operative Nursery School at the Jewish Community Center is a non-sectarian, non-profit, state licensed school and offers you the chance to be a part of your child’s first experience at school to work-play-grow with your child.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the B’nai B’rith Cotton ball a success. Our own Past President Stanley Yukon has been elected the new president of the B’nai B’rith Co-ordinating Council.
Our Convention Delegates, Pres. Dave Schloss and Stanley Yukon and the Alternates Harry Cohen and Past Pres. Irving Cohen are all completing their plans to be in San Francisco for the B’nai B’rith Convention. Sanford Goldman also plans to attend to give them his support, learn more about B’nai B’rith as well as have himself one swell time.

Sol Blanc is going to present a big, entertaining variety show at the next regular meeting of Lasker Lodge June 14. Sol has had 18 years of show business as a background, and we can expect some real top notch entertainment. There will be tap dancing, singing, comedy and many other acts, according to Sol, that you will be certain to enjoy. Everyone is invited, that is, the meeting is an open meeting so the members bring their wives and friends.
The meeting will begin promptly at 8 p.m. at Temple Center … so be there!
Have you heard about the book of meeting minutes that was discovered accidentally a few weeks ago. The book had minutes that go back to the inception of the lodge in 1887. We hope to be able to bring you some of the highlights from this book of interest in future columns.

The Men’s Club of Temple Beth Israel will hold its monthly dinner meeting Tuesday, June 1`5, at 6:30 p.m. at Temple Center
District Attorney Don Keller will speak on “The Tragedy of Narcotics” dealing with dope and its influence on youth.
The program starts at 8:00 o’clock. A special invitation is extended to those who do not come to the dinner, to attend Mr. Keller’s address.

Installation, Picnic Planned by YJC Club

The Young Jewish Couples Club is having its installation dinner-dance on June 26 at the Admiral Kidd Club. A steak dinner will be served; tickets, $6.00 per couple. Reservations must be made by June 19.
Independence Day, July 3, will be celebrated with a family style picnic at Presidio Park. An area has been reserved for the club and they extend a cordial invitation to all to pack a lunch and join them in the fun.

The regular activities of the club have ceased until the fall but during the summer months a varied program of outdoor activities has been planned. For announcements in connection with them, please watch the Jewish Press.

JCC ‘Lucky’ Night Is Coming June 27

Plans are nearing completion for the Jewish Community Center ‘Lucky’ Nite to be held Sunday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m. in Beth Jacob Center.
Food will be prepared by the Women’s Division of the Center and will be available at very reasonable prices. There will be plenty to eat and drink.
Featured that evening will be bingo with cash, and the kind of prizes you will want to win. There will be many tables of poker and all kinds of other fascinating games of skill and amusement.

Tifisra Men’s Club Holds Annual Dinner

On Sunday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m. Tifisra Men’s Club will have their annual June Dinner for members, their wives and friends.
Deputy Sheriff Robbins will be the principal speaker at the dinner. His topic will be “Narcotics and the Juvenile Problem.”
The meal in traditional men’s club manner, will be planned, prepared and served by Tifisra men, and should be of particular interest to those gourmets who are partial in Yiische Maycholim. The affair will be held at Tifereth Israel Synagogue.
Chef Moe Hershey, ably assisted by Dan Cheron, ARnie Goldstein and their committee, will be in charge.
Dinner will be followed by a social hour and cards.

Nothing to Buy in Entering Safety Contest

Here’s all you have to do.
Write a safe-driving slogan of not more than 10 words. Entrants may submit more than one slogan each on a separate entry blank. However, only one award will be made to any one contestant.
Official entry blanks are available at the following locations: The San Diego County Traffic Safety Council, 435 West Broadway, the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, 499 West Broadway, City Chevrolet Company, Kettner Blvd at Ash St.
All entries must be submitted on an official entry blank and mailed to the San Diego County Traffic Safety Council, 435 West Broadway, with a post mark not later than midnight June 30.
Entrants to be Carefully Screened–Before the grand prize and other awards are presented to winners of the San Diego County safe driving slogan contest, official police and court records will be thoroughly checked to determine whether all qualifications have been met. Drivers licenses must remain valid during the entire period of the contest.
Grand Prize Winner To Take Detroit Trip–If the winner of the grand award in the San Diego County safe driving contest prefers, he may take the delivery of the grand prize automobile at the Chevrolet factory in Detroit.
City Chevrolet Co., donor of the car, will pay the winner’s travel expenses, by plane or rail, to the motor city.
Parents Responsible—Children on bicycles are motorists just as much as adult auto drivers, and they have the same safety responsibilities. Latest statistics report that nearly one child a day is killed annually in collisions between bicycles and motor vehicles. Almost 22,000 are injured.
Part of the blame for these accidents belong to the drivers and some to the children themselves. A heavy share of responsibility however rests with mothers and fathers who failed to impress their children with the fundamental principles of bicycle safety. All parents and other eligible persons are urged to enter the county-wide traffic slogan contest, as a means of setting a good example for our children.
Are You a Safe Driver?—If you are—if you take normal precautions, observe the common sense rules of the road and display the courtesy that saves lives—you’re in line for one of several valuable prizes to be awarded in one of the most unusual contests ever conducted in San Diego County.
To qualify for consideration for these prizes, you must, first of all, have a valid and up-to-date California driver’s license, either commercial or private, during the entire period from April 1, 1954 to June 30, 1954.
Personnel on active duty in the armed forces, holding valid driver’s licenses from their home states are also eligible. In the 91-day period, you must not be involved as a driver in any accident or cites for a traffic violation (unless adjudged not guilty). Such deviations from safe driving conduct automatically disqualify entrants in this unique contest. Parking tickets, however, do not disqualify the contestants.
The grand prize donated by the City Chevrolet Company, san Diego is: A 1954 model Series 201 Chevrolet sedan, complete with Power-Glide automatic transmission and U.?S. royal Master white sidewall tires – valued at $2,679.05 delivered in San Diego, sales tax and California licenses included.
With the competition entering the final three weeks, the San Diego County Traffic Safety Council has announced additional prizes to be given. They include a $200 merchandise certificate from the Walker-Scott Corporation for the best entry in the women’s division, and a $300 scholarship will be presented to an entrant 25 years or younger.
The scholarship has been contributed by the Rohr “Six-Bit Club,” an organization of employees of the Rohr Aircraft Co., David Thompson, Council Executive Director, announced this week. Additional prizes will be award to entrants from the armed forces.

Mac and Julia Kaufman left today on a motor trip to the north. They will be in San Francisco with son, Paul, until the end of the Berkeley semester when Paul will head for New York, and Mack and Julia will travel to Oregon, Washington and British Columbia and return to San Diego in about two weeks.
