J*Company joins effort in behalf of homeless students

LA JOLLA, California (Press Release) –Artists Taking Action, J*Company Youth Theatre’s teen community service organization, announced on Friday, Oct. 1, that it is teaming up with Canyon Crest Academy  and La Costa Canyon’s  Improv Clubs for a show to raise funds enabling students of the Monarch School to attend future J*Company musical theater shows.

The ATA Comedy Improv Show is a hilarious, fast-paced, family-friendly event, with two teams playing improvisational games against each other in the style of a sports match, all based on audience suggestions. It will be held at 8:00pm, Saturday, October 9.

Founded in 2008 by J*Company’s Artistic Director Joey Landwehr, Artists Taking Action is a teen service organization that works to improve their community. They choose several projects a year, including the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, a Tony Award Party fundraiser, and new this year, the Comedy Improv Show.

“Not only do these wonderful young artists learn to take care of their community through the arts, they also practice the business side of the arts including working with committees and boards to make important decisions, life skills they will need as they graduate. It is so very important for the art community to work together for a common goal, and that is why I am so excited about bringing these incredible improvisers from different organizations to J*Company’s home, The David and Dorothea Garfield Theatre, to showcase their artistry. And all while helping those less fortunate who may not have the chance to make the arts a part of their lives.”

CCA’s Improv Club has used its popular show for several fundraisers, including sold out shows for the girls’ soccer team and CCA’s Envision Arts Program. Parent mentor Jamie Picker says, “Audience members love seeing their suggestions come to life on stage when our talented students take their ideas and immediately turn them into comical scenes.”

Founded in 1988, the Monarch School and its committed team of teachers, administrators and volunteers is dedicated to providing homeless and at-risk children with an accredited education while caring for their basic needs. Today, more than 160 kids between the ages of 4 and 19 are enrolled at the Monarch School.

Ronne Froman, Interim VP of Development at the Monarch School says, “What a wonderful opportunity for our students to see the world of musical theatre . . . and see that it could be an avenue for their future.
Shaina Krevat is a member of both ATA and the CCA Improv Team.  “I love the idea of ATA, CCA and La Costa Canyon working together to help the students of the Monarch School.”
