Southwestern Jewish Press, April 1, 1955, Page 1
Opening of the 1955 United Jewish Fund Campaign on behalf of 58 overseas national and local organizations will take place tomorrow, Saturday, April 1, at 6:30 p.m. as top level community leaders gather in the Ballroom of the El Cortez Hotel. Reservations may still be made by calling the United Jewish Fund, BE 2-5172.
Highlighting the kick-off dinner will be the appearance of Kirk Douglas as guest of honor and principal speaker.
“The campaign,” said Max Rabinowitz, general campaign chairman, “is an annual must for the entire Jewish community. Vital needs of 58 agencies throughout the world and in our own city depend on our efforts. Too few of us know the real stake we have in a united campaign which meets our needs and helps keep us united community.
Mr. Rabinowitz also announced that Harry Sugarman, member of the Board of Directors of the fund and co-chairman of the Advanced Gifts Committee, will act as chairman for the dinner meeting at which more than 250 community leaders are expected.
Douglas, who will speak on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal, will tell of the needs as he saw them during the time he was making movies in Israel, France and Italy. The actor became aware of the work that was being done by American Jewish organizations to relieve suffering and distress and to aid thousands of people to begin a new life in the State of Israel.
Douglas’s new two starring pictures, Walt Disney’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” and “The Racers,” have brought him into a top position. He will be greeted by Morris Douglas, President of the United Jewish Fund.
Besides the United Jewish Appeal, 58 other health, welfare, educational and recreational organizations and agencies in the United States, San Diego and overseas are beneficiaries of the $220,000 goal of this year’s campaign.

Southwestern Jewish Press, April 1, 1955, Page 2
There is still time to participate in the gala western celebration of “World’s Jewish Child’s Day,” according to Mrs. Julius Levin, chairman for the luncheon party given by the San Diego chapter of Hadassah. The response to the city-wide invitation for the mother and child’s luncheon on Monday, April 4th, at 12 p.m. in the Veterans Memorial Building, located at Upas and Park Blvd, has been so gratifying that Mrs. Levin has run out of coin booklets. However, any child or adult will be admitted for the total contents of the booklet amounting to $3.00 which is the approximate cost of maintaining a child in Israel for one day. Adults accompanied by a child will be admitted for 50c. Full donor credit will be given for every filled booklet presented by the children.

Women’s League—J.C.C
Southwestern Jewish Press, April 1, 1955, Page 2
The Card Party Month was a huge success, brining in a substantial sum for the Jay Cee Camperships. Lilo Berger, Dorothy Tucker and Lynne Schwartz were hostesses at a square dance party given at the Center; and the donations at this affair were turned over to the Campership fund. The check for the entire amount collected at these various parties will be turned over to Al Hutler to be sued to send needy children to J.C.C. summer camp.
Another project carried on by the Women’s League, with Rose Aved as the chairman, is getting volunteer parents to supervise the Thursday night teen-age activities at the Center. So far the following fathers have given one night each: Henry Gardner, Fred Kaufman, Ruben Aved, Dr. Milton Schwartz, Eugene Tucker and Darwin McStroul. We have just received names of five volunteers from the Yo-Ma-Co Club who will help with this project.
The Women’s League meets at the Jewish Community Center every third Thursday of the month at 10:30 a.m. Anyone interested in joining this hard-working organization just come to our next meeting or contact our president, Sylvia Rose, AT 1-7586 for more information.
