TEHRAN (WJC)–Officials in Iran are upset after discovering the outline of a Star of David atop the roof of the headquarters of Iran Air, the Islamic republic’s national airline, the Arab news channel ‘al-Arabiya’ reports. The six-pointed star was discovered by a Google Earth user recently, over three decades after the building was constructed by Israeli engineers. Israel and the Shah’s Iran maintained good ties until the Islamic Revolution of 1979 ended the relationship. Before 1979, Israel brokered arms deals with Iran, and there were regular flights between Tehran and Tel Aviv.
Once the existence of the Star of David was reported in Iranian media, Iranian officials called for the immediate removal of the apparently offensive Jewish symbol. The incident is not the first time in recent months that the Star of David sparked controversy in Iran. In August, a star was spotted on a building in a main square in Tehran, prompting some to claim that the “Zionist regime is conquering Revolution Square.”
