Former Congressman Stephen Solarz mourned in ADL statement

NEW YORK (Press Release) — The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) mourns the passing of former New York Rep. Stephen Solarz, a tireless champion for human rights, advocate for democracy, and guardian of the safety and security of the State of Israel.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, who worked closely with the nine-term Brooklyn congressman on issues of importance to the Jewish community for many years, issued the following statement:

“Congressman Solarz was an outspoken and passionate advocate for the security of Israel during his service on the Foreign Affairs Committee and throughout his long career.  He worked tirelessly to advance democracy in all corners of the world.  He was a statesman who reached across party lines to forge unity against oppression abroad and equality and religious freedom at home.

“Mr. Solarz was an early and outspoken supporter for improved federal response to hate crimes and an original author of critical legislation to promote accommodation of religion and to expand protections for religious employees in the workplace.

“His passion, his leadership, his indignation against injustice will be missed.”
