SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — Artist Lenore Simon, whose exhibit opens Saturday, Dec. 4, at Art and Framing Solutions (4250 Morena Blvd. Suite E) recently was asked how she came to create a series of artworks entitled “Symbols of my People.”
She responded: “This series owes its origin to Grandpa Reuben Simon, my husband’s father. He owned a tallit and phylacteries which were contained in a little embroidered velvet pouch. After Reuben’s death, these were presented to my late husband Robert. Prior to our son’s Bar Mitzvah, I foolishly attempted to wash the decades-old shawl so that it could be worn for this special occasion. Unfortunately, it crumpled beyond any possibility of ever being worn again.
“The grief and guilt I felt after committing such a destructive act transformed into a surge of creative expression. The knotted, fringed shawl became the catalyst for the series. I am proud of its image being included in one of the heavily illustrated art books published by North Lights Books. The book, written by Susan E. Davis is entitled 59 More Studio Secrets for the Graphic Artist.
“On four separate pages she illustrates and shares the method by which I discovered some innovative means of replicating existing forms. These include transforming sacred items such as a Sabbath candle holder and a metal-work Hamsah into an original work of Art.”
The series “Symbols of my People” can be seen at Simon’s upcoming art exhibition. Two of the works in this series are mixed media, and the third is a unique image created with printer’s ink and brayers.
