LONDON– Sweden was the target of the latest suicide bombing in Europe, and surprise, surprise, the bomber originated in the UK. Our green and pleasant land has become” Londonistan“, perhaps the leading source of terrorism in the Western World.
The latest bomber lived in the UK, as did at one time or another the “underpants” bomber, and the “shoe” bomber, both of which in recent years tried to blow up aircraft. Also the bombers of Mike’s Pub in Tel Aviv. Also a former UK resident was the man who murdered Daniel Pearl the American journalist in Pakistan. The list goes on, and not forgetting of course the bombings on the London Underground and a multiplicity of thwarted bomb attempts, including a major plan to blow up a shopping centre in Manchester.
To be frank, one could argue that NATO forces are better served by leaving Afghanistan, and redeploying to the UK.
In UK Jewish news, there is some controversy currently, surrounding attempts by many leading members of our community to distance themselves from Israeli policy. One very significant leading figure was even quoted in the press as suggesting that Israel may be heading towards an apartheid state. This is the language of Israel’s most implacable enemies, and as you may imagine, has raised a major storm in the UK Jewish community. I suspect that many of our self appointed leaders would be much happier if Tzipi Livni was the Israeli leader, and not Binyamin Netanyahu.
Thus some things never change. The Balfour Declaration by the British Government , almost 100 years ago now, was actually “watered down” to be less pro Zionist, because the establishment UK Jewish leadership were hostile to Zionism. However, Chaim Weizmann had the support of the Jewish masses, and they are still the ones who support Israel unreservedly.
Consequently, it is remarkable how many UK Jews own apartments in Israel. One of the main motivations is fear for the future of Jews in “Londonistan”- we are a tiny community of at most 250,000, among several million Muslims, many of whom are radicalised . We fear for the future. Interestingly, a leading Dutch politician was quoted this week as saying that there is no future for Jews in Holland, due to the open hostility shown to them by the many Somali immigrants in their country.
We face a most uncertain future, with the economic distress that the Western World is experiencing , and probably the weakest American President in recent times, providing a bleak backdrop to events.
