The Dedication and Fiesta at the new City Park, Colina Del Sol, at 54th and Universkity, was a huge success, and one of the most successful booths was the one put up and run by the women of the Women’s League of the JCC and some of the men of the Board.  Mr. Fred Kaufman  was in charge of the building of the booth  and the work and materials were donate by Hunt and Robinson Builders. Mrs. Faye  Fredman, Mr. Victor Selten and  Mr. Norman Gelman and Mr. Fay were responsible for the murals, signs and decorations of the outstanding booth. Dr. Richard Disraeli loaned us the Pirates’ Treasure Chest around which the theme of the booth was based.

Thelma Selten was the overall chairman and Elaine Kravitz was in charge of the pin-wheel and balloon section and also the teen-agers who were in charge of that concession. The girls who worked hard in this department were Judy Aved, Louise and Marilyn Gelman, Robin  McStroul, Marcia Ruskin and Jackee Wixen.  The women who worked  hard and long were Edith Gelman, Tudo Solomon, Alice Solomon, Sylvia Rose, Bernice Aved, Dorothy Tucker, Lynne Schwartz, Adele Cohen, Doris  Lipinsky, Jeanette Wax, Doris Borenstein  and Rose Aved.  Al and Leon Solomon and Max and  Rose Felsman gave assistance in numerous ways.

Jewish Center

Southwestern Jewish Press, June 10-June 23, 1955, Page 7

If at all possible this year, the directors of the Community Center have voted to set up a permanent summer site for the day camp on the property owned by the Center on 5th and University, according to Mr. Hutler.   Water, toilet facilities and housing have been carefully planned and everything depends on the speed with which the project can be worked out. If the permanent site is used, then it will become a central meeting place for the entire camp and overnight camping will becarried on at the site as well as in other facilities in the county.

Pre-School Day Camp Planned by Center
Southwestern Jewish Press, June 10-June 23, 1955, Page 7

Two innovations will possibly be made in San Diego Jewish Community Center’s Camp Jaycee activities which will open on June 27, according to Leonard Zlotoff, Chairman of the Center’s program committee and liaison with the Day Camp.

In cooperation with the Community Center’s Cooperative Nursery School, plans are being considered for a Pre-School Day Camp limited to children between the ages of three and five years old.  If carried out, this will be the first of its kind in San Diego, according to Albert A. Hutler, Center Executive.

Approval has also been secured from all city agencies to set up a fixed site for Camp Jaycee activities on the Center property at 54th St. and University and to make use of the park across the road. If able to be carried out this summer, Camp Jaycee will be located in an Indian Village set up with wigwams and tents for the use of the campers. There will also be outdoor cooking facilities and activities area.

Thinking on the question of pre-school day camp indicates that it will be held daily Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 12 noon at either the Center or the site which may be set up as a central pint. Included in the program will be sand play, games, nature studies, stories, rhythm, water play and carefully supervised recreation using playground equipment.

A carefully selected staff under the direction of David Anfanger, Head Counselor of Camp Jaycee, will guide the children in safe, healthy, group play, and group living with their playmates of the same age.

Enrollment in the pre-school day camp will be limited and interested parents are urged to make immediate registration plans for their youngsters.

Anyone interested in such activity for their youngsters should contact the Center, AT -1-7744.

Plea for Camperships Made by Chairman

Southwestern Jewish Press, June 10-June 23, 1955, Page 7

An appeal for camperships for Camp Jay Cee was made by Leonard Zlotoff, program committee chairman of the Jewish Community Center.

Making his appeal for organizations and individuals to give camperships for one or more weeks for Camp Jay Cee, Zlotoff stated that there have been 19 requests for full camperships for boys and girls to attend the summer camp of the Jewish Community Center.

At the present time enough camperships have been donated to assure 12 youngsters a two week period each in the day camp. The Center, Zlotoff said, would like to be able to give at least four weeks to each of the boys and girls who cannot afford to pay the camp Jay Cee fee.

“Contribution of $11.50 will allow one child to go to Camp for one week; $23 will give a campership for a two-week period; #32 will permit a four-week session and $78 will provide eight weeks for one child,” Zlotoff said.

Requests for camperships are screened through recognized social agencies including the Jewish Social Service Agen cy. You may give a campership by sending it to Camp Jay Cee, Jewish Community Center, 3227 El Cajon Blvd.

‘Mikado’ To Open Star-Light season

Southwestern Jewish Press, June 10-June 23, 1955, Page 8

San Diego history will be made June 23, when Star-Light Opera opens its tenth and most ambitious season of out-door summer musicals in Balboa Park Bowl, at 8:30 with a revival of “The Mikado.” The Gilbert and Sullivan favorite was chosen by thousands of Star-Light fans last summer as the favorite from a list of 40 shows for revival this year.  Naturally, it is also the prime choice of the association itself, since it is the vehicle with which it launched its career, back in 1946, in the Wedgeforth Bowl, at the Zoo.

New shows in the gala tenth season include “Wonderful Town,” recent smash hit on Broadway, and “South Pacific.” All of the rest will play the usual eight nights—Thursdays through Sundays, except “The Mikado.”

Because of the unprecedented demand for season tickets, this convenient and economical way to see all six shows from the same good seats is still open during the sale of single admissions to each of the 561 performances of the six top musicals.  The management announces that there are still many good seats available for all opening nights (Thursdays) with particularly choice seats for all Sunday night showings.

In The Good Old Summertime

Southwestern Jewish Press, June 10-June 23, 1955, Page 8

By Julia Kaufman

The Star-Light Opera will open the season with “The Mikado” on June 23rd. Star-Lilght is the only major summer stock company to operate  successfully relying entirely on talent secured from the 750,000 residents of San Diego County. It depends solely on box office receipts to meet a budget of more than $200,000; has never asked for tax money and has no “Angels.”  Patronage from San Diegans and tourists keep it going and growing.

*
Robert Shaw, who was the recipient of two awards this past week, will pick up his baton on July 12th and lead the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in another series of “music under the stars.” Seven concerts will be presented each Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. in the Balboa Park Bowl.  Season tickets are now available at the Palmer Box Office, 640 Broadway, BE 9-4700.

Names, sights and situations familiar to San Diegans are all “Caught in the Act” at the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park. The personal review is fast moving, humorous an filled with lyrics that make the audience feel very much a part of the show.  Pat McGhee and Gilbert Warner have supplied catchy melodies to suit every mood. If you haven’t already seen it, don’t wait until it is too late… the show goes off on June 18th.  Phone BE 9-9139 and make a reservation.

Idealists are famous for lost causes so it is a pleasure to see that Burton Jones, owner of the unique Capri Theatre, has justified his belief that San Diegans wanted and would appreciate a motion picture theatre catering to Adults. The attendance the other night for “Gates of Hell,” Japanese award-winning picture, proved that there are enough discriminating people in San Diego to support such a theatre.

James Britton, designer and associate editor of Point Newsweekly, is responsible for the exhibitions of outstanding paintings and sculpture, from all over America which can be seen in the Capri foyer. The current display of work by contemporary artists, which was loaned through the Museum Purchase Fund set up by Gloria Vanderbilt-Stokowski, provoked the usual comments from the viewers, for whom the goal of the artist is something vague and mysterious; they see only a series of framed varicolored and meaningless shapes. In sharp contrast was the exceedingly beautiful and understandable color and settings in the “Gates of Hell.”  The picture will be shown for another week and if you enjoy the unusual I highly recommend it.

*
For those who missed Danny Kaye in the World Health Organization Picture, there will be a repeat showing at the Hillcrest Theatre June 16-18.  Nothing like seeing for yourself what United Nations is doing for the children around the world!
