Hebrew University wins Red Cross international law competition; competes next in France

JERUSALEM (Press Release) – A group of students from the Hebrew University’s Faculty of Law have won first place in a Red Cross competition on international humanitarian law.

The Hebrew University representatives defeated eleven other groups from educational institutions from across Israel.

The annual competition includes simulation of legal debates on a range of conflict situations, where each group is requested to present a side in the debate. The competitors were asked to demonstrate knowledge of laws of warfare, international humanitarian law, international criminal law and human rights law. The winning group was chosen by an international panel of judges according to different criteria, including legal knowledge, understanding of international law, ability to relate this knowledge from memory, and cooperation with other members of the group.

The two groups that represented the Hebrew University were coached by Dr. Tomer Broude of the Faculty of Law and graduate of the Faculty, Yifat Barak. The members of the winning group are Maayan Nizna, Avitar Barel and Efrat Bognim, who also won the prize for the best speaker in the competition. In March 2011, the winning team will represent the Hebrew University at the Jean-Pictet Competition on international humanitarian law, which is held in France.
