San Diego Museum of Man becomes formal affiliate of the Smithsonian

SAN DIEGO (Press Release) – The San Diego Museum of Man (SDMoM), a cultural and physical anthropology museum in Balboa Park, announced on Monday that it joins 164 cultural institutions as an Affiliate  of  the Smithsonian Institution. On Friday, January 14, Harold Closter, director of Smithsonian Affiliations, will formally present SDMoM with its Certificate of Affiliation.
“Having been identified as an Affiliate of the Smithsonian is an indescribable honor, and one that the museum will cherish and utilize for a long time to come,” says SDMoM’s Executive Director Dr. Micah D. Parzen.

“Our goal at the Museum of Man is to increase and diffuse knowledge, which perfectly aligns with what the Smithsonian has accomplished for more than 150 years. This is not only an exciting development for the Museum of Man, but also for all of Balboa Park.” SDMoM is one of only two institutions in Balboa Park in association with the Smithsonian, the other being the San Diego Air & Space Museum.
“We are delighted to announce the Affiliation between the San Diego Museum of Man and the Smithsonian Institution,” said Harold A. Closter, director of Smithsonian Affiliations.  “The San Diego Museum of Man is recognized as one of the premier anthropology museums in America and has collaborated with the Smithsonian in many ways over the years.  The Smithsonian’s involvement in establishing the initial collections of the museum in 1915 now brings this relationship full circle.”
