SAN DIEGO—We add to our collection of reactions to the shooting rampage in Tucson alphabetized statements from organizations and individuals, without regard to their rank. From the standpoint of this newspaper, we think one lead ought to be pursued vigorously by investigators. The suspect, Jared Lee Loughner, reportedly had posted that one of his favorite books was Mein Kampf, the anti-Semitic treatise by Adolf Hitler. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona) as well as others who were hit by the gunman’s bullets, are our fellow Jews. We don’t know that Loughner was motivated by Neo-Nazi anti-Semitism, but we think investigators should look very carefully into this.
Rep. Sandy Adams (R-Florida): “I am horrified by the senseless attack on Representative Gabrielle Giffords, members of her staff and the innocent people who came to watch her speak. We came to Congress together and I had the privilege of knowing her as a friend and colleague. It is my hope and expectation that the coward who carried out this horrific act of violence will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I extend my hand of friendship to her family and staff and will keep them in my prayers.”
Rep. Gabriel Becerra (D-California): “What a sad and tragic day this is to learn of the shooting of our dear friend and colleague Gabrielle Giffords and many others attending her Congressional event in Tucson, Arizona. She has spent her time in office working her heart out to improve the lives of the people she represents. And she loves her husband and family above all else. On this tragic day, Jill and I are praying for Gabby’s recovery, and we hold her family in our hearts. Chief Judge John Roll was a dedicated jurist whose death is a terrible loss to Arizona and to the country. We do not yet know the motivation behind these shootings. We know the deep pain and horror that all the family members and loved ones who have been made victims by this man and his gun are going through. We wish we didn’t, but we know it too well. We were there almost 30 years ago, dealing with the doctors, the hospital, the surgeons, and so much uncertainty. We were there coping with the horror of bullet wounds to the head, not knowing if Jim would live or die or what kind of life he would have. We were there hoping and praying for the best, that his life would be spared and the damage to his brilliant mind would be minimal. We want all the families to know that we were there then, and we are with them now. Our thoughts, our hopes – we pray that they can feel them and know just a small measure of peace. We pray that they understand how committed we long have been to making our beloved country a place where gun violence doesn’t happen so easily and destroy so many. We offer our condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Such a despicable and destructive act should not take place in a civilized and sane society. Whoever is responsible for this terrible attack on the Congresswoman and an innocent crowd of civilians should be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible.”
Rep. Chip Cravaack (R-Minnesota): “I was shocked and deeply saddened upon learning of today’s tragic shooting of Representative Gabrielle Giffords, members of the Congresswoman’s staff, citizens attending the event, and the death of U.S. District Court Judge John Roll. It is a sad day for America, and for our democracy that shines bright as a beacon of hope for so many other countries. While we do not yet know the motive of the shooter, this is a time for all our elected officials, political leaders and others in public life to vigorously denounce what has become a more common practice of using language laced with violent innuendos and metaphor when discussing opposition in politics. Today is clear and unequivocal evidence that this practice must cease immediately.”

Our thoughts are with those shooting victims who were murdered and those injured who remain in the hospital, along with their families and loved ones.Six people, including a federal judge and a nine-year-old child, were killed by what appears to have been a lone shooter. At least 12 others, including Giffords, were wounded. We are confident that all Americans, regardless of their political affiliations, will unite to condemn this atrocity, and reaffirm our faith in our country’s fundamental democratic values of mutual respect and free speech. A 22-year-old man was arrested immediately after the shootings. There are worrying indications that the gunman was motivated by extremist political views, which encourage the use of violence against those who think differently. He should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and law enforcement should investigate whether he acted alone or had any accomplices. Giffords traveled to Israel on an AJC Project Interchange educational seminar in 2001, when she was a state senator.”

My thoughts and prayers are with her and her loved ones at this tragic time, and we are holding all of those injured in this attack in our hearts and prayers for a speedy recovery. We must remember them, and keep strong for them at this difficult and tenuous time. Events such as these shake us to our core; they make us feel vulnerable and remind us that each life is precious. We as Americans must stand tall in the face of such despicable, horrifying acts. We must not – we will not – tolerate such violence in this country, a country that was founded on the ideals of tolerance and respect of the views and rights of all Americans. Rep. Giffords serves the citizens of this country, and we must stand strong together on her behalf, and on behalf of all of those affected by today’s (Saturday’s) tragedy.”
Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas): “”I am shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic act of violence in Tucson that has claimed the lives of several victims, including Chief Judge John Roll, and has left Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords fighting for her life. Carolina and I are praying for Gabby, her staff, and all those affected by this national tragedy. I ask all El Pasoans to keep Congresswoman Giffords, and all of today’s (Saturday’s) victims, and their families in their prayers. Congresswoman Giffords is an outspoken and hard-working public servant, and I have had the privilege of working with her on issues important to the border region. Gabby is a fellow colleague on the House Armed Services Committee and the Congressional Border Caucus. She is a tireless advocate for our region. Acts of violence against our government representatives undermines our democracy, and I hope justice is served to those responsible for this senseless and cowardly act.”
Cecile Richards, president, Planned Parenthood: “The thoughts, wishes, and prayers of the entire Planned Parenthood family are with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona and all of the victims of the tragic shooting incident in Tucson, Arizona today (Saturday). Congresswoman Giffords is an invaluable and indefatigable advocate and public servant whom we respect for her courageous leadership on behalf of the people of Arizona and women everywhere. She is a fearless champion of health care for all Americans, and she played a vital role in the passage of the most important health care legislation in our nation’s history. She is a close friend of Planned Parenthood, and our staff and supporters in Arizona and across the country fervently hope for her recovery. We mourn all who were killed in this tragedy, and we will keep their families in our thoughts and prayers.”

Rep. Martha Roby (R-Alabama): “I was heartbroken to hear the news of the heinous attack on my colleague, Rep. Giffords. It is a sad day when an American who is serving his or her country becomes a victim of such a senseless act of violence. One of the characteristics that make America exceptional is that we settle our differences through civil dialogue, democratic rule, and the fair adjudication of disputes based on the rule of law—not through cowardly acts of violence. There is simply no place for that in American society, and it should never be tolerated. The person responsible for this horrific crime must be held accountable and punished to the full extent of the law. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Rep. Giffords, her staff, and their family and friends during this very difficult time.”
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-California):
Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Illinois): “Today’s (Saturday’s) attack against Rep. Giffords, members of her staff, and citizens interacting with their representative in the Tucson area, is horrifying and devastating, and I condemn it in the strongest of terms. Attacks of this kind, in our democratic society, simply cannot stand. My thoughts and prayers are with all those injured and their families in this senseless attack.”
*
Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-California): This cowardly act of violence is not only a tragedy for Gabby and the other victims, it is a tragedy for all Americans. Gabby has always been a committed advocate for her constituents and I am honored to serve with her in Congress. My thoughts and prayers are with her tonight and her family, as well as all of the victims of this unimaginable and horrific crime.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont): “Jane’s and my thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords. Our hearts go out to all those who were slain and wounded in Tucson. This is a sad day for all Americans. This senseless and cowardly shooting occurred as the congresswoman and her constituents were engaged in the kind of event that makes our democracy work and represents America at its best. Anti-government sentiment carried to a violent and deadly extreme is a sad reflection of America at its worst. America is better than this.”

Barry Rubin, director, Global Research in International Affairs (GLORIA) Center, Herzliya, Israel: “Giffords seems to be a moderate Democrat–my kind of politician–who is pro-Israel and pretty centrist, the last profile of someone who would be targeted by a left- or right-wing extremist. Jared Loughner, 22, is the shooter. He seems to be a deranged person–among his favorite books he lists both Mein Kampf AND the Communist Manifesto. Some of his statements can (and probably will) be attributed to conservative influences–mistrust of government, obsession with gold/silver backed currency–but he seems actually quite mental. No clue yet as to whether Giffords was targeted for any particular reason other than her availability. I have seen at least four tweets by people who claim to have known him saying he was left-wing–though this may or may not be true. I will update this item as more information is available.”
Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Maryland): Gabby Giffords is a friend and admired colleague. She and I entered Congress the same year and I have come to know her as an effective and steady legislator. This is a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to Gabby’s family and to the families of the other individuals who were victims in this senseless act of violence. “
Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Illinois): “I am horrified at the news that several people, including my colleague Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, were shot today (Saturday) in Tucson, Arizona, some of them fatally. My heart goes out to the families, friends and colleagues of the individuals who were injured or killed in this terrible act of violence. I hold them all in my thoughts and prayers. Gabrielle Giffords is a smart and effective Congresswoman, extremely friendly, and very popular with her colleagues. She is a refreshing and thoughtful voice in the Congress and is dedicated to the people of her district to whom she is always accessible. Congresswoman Giffords conducts herself in a dignified, civil manner and with a kind demeanor, making it particularly shocking that she would be the target of such violence. I pray for her full recovery.”*Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wisconsin): “My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Judge John Roll, and the other individuals, including several congressional staffers, who were shot earlier today (Saturday) at a public event in Arizona. We are fortunate to live in a country that allows open debate and discussion, and it is a tragic, horrible day when someone makes a senseless attack on anyone, whether a leader or a citizen participating in the democratic process. It is my hope that those responsible will be quickly brought to justice, so that the peoples’ business can continue to be done without feelings of vulnerability or fear, and in the same spirit the Founding Fathers intended it to be done.”

Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Alabama): “My thoughts and prayers are with Representative Giffords, her husband Captain Mark Kelly, her family, staff and all the victims of this horrible attack. The tragedy that occurred today is unconscionable and will not be tolerated. The perpetrator that is responsible for this horrific act should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Federal, State and local law enforcement authorities in Arizona are investigating the shooting and will work toward identifying ways in which to enhance security measures that affect Members of Congress, our staff and constituents as we carry out our job of serving the needs of our districts. I ask that all in the Seventh Congressional District keep Representative Giffords, her family, staff and all of the victims of this tragedy in prayer.” *
Rep. Adam Smith (D-Washington): ““I am deeply saddened by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Giffords, her staff and others victims of the shooting. I have served with Congresswoman Giffords on the House Armed Services Committee for years, and she is a dear personal friend. She is an extraordinary member of Congress and an outstanding member of the House Armed Services Committee. Her commitment to her family, our nation and our troops is unparalleled. I have never served with a more principled, dedicated member of Congress. Her family, as well as the families of everyone involved in this tragedy, will be in my thoughts and prayers.” *
Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine): “I was horrified and deeply saddened to learn of the unspeakable tragedy in Tucson, Arizona, when a gunman fired shots during a constituent event held by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colorado): “This is a sad day for our country. My thoughts and prayers go out to Rep. I’m privileged to serve with her in the U.S. Congress and I’m honored to call her my friend. Today’s shootings, during a meeting between Rep. Giffords and her neighbors, were a cowardly attack on our democracy.”
*
Sen. Tom Udall (D-New Mexico): “Gabby has been my friend and colleague for years. Not only is she remarkably intelligent, Gabby is a warm and compassionate individual. Today (Saturday), she was answering her call to public service when these unspeakable acts of violence took place. Miriam Weisman, Arizona Regional Chair, Anti-Defamation League: “We are shocked by this unconscionable and horrific act of violence against one of our highly respected public servants. We agree with President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner that this was more than an attack on one member of Congress – it is an attack on all public servants and the very fabric of our democracy.During her years in the statehouse, Rep. Giffords served on the ADL Arizona Regional Board. Her affiliation with ADL, which monitors and exposes hate and extremist groups, contributed to her awareness of the nexus between hate ideology and violence. It is a testament to her dedication to her constituents that despite past threats against her, Rep. Giffords has always been so accessible to the people she represents. Our thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords and the other victims and their families. ADL remains in contact with law enforcement as investigators endeavor to establish a motive for the attack. It is critical to determine whether the alleged shooter, Jared Lee Loughner, acted alone or with others, and whether he was influenced by extremist literature, propaganda or hate speech. While it is still not clear whether the attack was motivated by political ideology, the tragedy has already led to, as Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik put it, ‘soul searching’ about the connection between incivility and violence. We applaud Sheriff Dupnik’s statements condemning the volatile nature of political discourse in America and for taking this investigation seriously.” *
