Success Story – A man who has the nerve to try his wings, without knowing for certain whether he will fly or fall, is always a hero to his friends when he makes good. It was, therefore, a thrill to see Sid Fleischman’s name on the Spreckle (sic, Spreckels) Theatre’s big screen, not only as author of the book but also as screen writer of “Blood Alley” starring John Wayne and Lauren Becal (sic, Bacall).
Many San Diegans remember Sid as a reporter on the Journal and one of the original publishers of the Point Magazine. When he decided to concentrate on creative writing his success was almost immediate. His novels were accepted and published…. Director Wellman read and liked “Blood Alley” and engaged Sid to do the screenwriting. Since then he has completed another screenplay, “Goodbye My Lady,” from the novel by James Street. I’ll take Sid’s word for it when he says the picture will be tops.
“Summertime” with Kathryn Hepburn, currently being shown at the Mission Theatre, has, in addition to excellent performances, some magnificent scenes of Venice. In Cinemascope and Color it is the next best thing to a visit to this fabulous city on the water.
Civic Music – The S.D. Civic Music Association begins its eighth season on October 15th, at the Russ Auditorium, with Herva Nelli, Metropolitan Opera soprano. Miss Neilli is famed as the “Toscanini soprano.” Since 1947 she has starred in all of the Maestro’s famous broadcasts of opera-in-concert form. This concert is for Civic Music Association members only.
Choral Music – Of interest to all lovers of fine choral music is Mr. Wm. E. King’s announcement that on November 9th, the Santa Cecilia Choir from Rome will be heard in concert at the Russ Auditorium. The choir will perform compositions from all nationalities and centuries from Palestrina to Stravinski. Membership in the Academy of Santa Cecilia has been enjoyed by such non-Italians as Wagner, Liszt, and Gounod. In our own times, artur Rubenstein is one of the few foreigners so honored. Tickets may be obtained at the Howarth Box Office, So. Calif. Music. Co.
“Adventures in Living” – Do you believe that true love and jealousy go hand in hand?” If you do, it is my advice that you set aside Tuesday, Oct. 18th, at 8 p.m. and hear what John Robert Clarke has to say on the subject. Now in its sixth fall series, “Adventures in Living” lectures are held at the house of Hospitality and are open to the pubic.

Breathtaking Scenes Spark “Ulysses”
Southwestern Jewish Press, October 14, 1955, Page 3
The tremendous sweep of Homer’s great classic “The Odyssey,” is the greatest adventure-romance the world has ever known.
A magnificent spectacle on the DeMille scale “Ulysses” opening Oct 19 at the Capri Theatre, has been hailed as a drama of breathtaking grandeur.
No expense was spared to recreate as faithfully as possible all the color and detail of the remarkable saga of the great Greek warrior’s danger-beset voyage home from the Trojan War. For the war itself and the destruction of Troy, a huge replica of the famous Trojan Horse was built, large enough to contain fifty actors. Ulyesses, played by Kirk Douglas, captains a ship 100 foot in length and rowed by 32 oarsmen, the same vessel that is torn asunder in an incredibly realistic storm.
Silvano Mangano, portraying the enchantress Circe, lures her victims to a cave constructed for the film of melted, vari-colored glass, a sight in Technicolor of weird, unmatched beauty. Circe herself sports a greenish hairdo and skin that gives her the required eerie, witch-like appearance but still leaves her the superb beauty that makes Ulysses her love slave.

Lasker Lodge News
Southwestern Jewish Press, October 14, 1955, Page 3
By Lou Levitt
Judge Arthur Mundo was presented an Outstanding Americanism Award at the last regular meeting fo the lodge. The meeting was well attended and several members of the New Life Club were present.
The annual dinner dance for the Lodge will be held at Mission Valley Country Club on Sunday Evening, November 27. Co-chairmen Lou Levitt and Harry Wax promise that this will be the best one yet, and urge members to make reservations early. The charge will be $8.00 per couple which will include dinner and dancing.
Marshall Zucker is working very hard on the fund raising that will come about from the sale of the tickets for the new cars to be given away at the Harvest Ball. If each member of the lodge buys only 3 tickets, the Lodge ill clear over $1,000. We need this money to balance our budget and get the next year off to a flying start. This is the easiest way possible for the Lodge to raise the money, and all the members are urgbed to sell at least this many tickets. If this project is a success, it will eliminate the need for any further fundraising campaigns in the future. Lets back Marshall and Lodge up, and put thins thing over.
