‘Mike’ Klarfeld, husband of Councilwoman Marti Emerald, dies at 83

SAN  DIEGO — The office of San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald has announced the death of her husband, S. Myron “Mike”  Klarfeld, at the age of 83 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.  A news release from the councilwoman said that Klarfeld, an attorney, pilot and motorcyclist, died in Emerald’s arms on February 23.

“An attorney for 54 years, he was a true champion of justice.  He was a lifelong pilot, crisscrossing America in his personal airplanes.  Mike also travelled the backroads of America on his Harley Davikdson, even winning Best of Show with his ‘Dragon’ at the famed Sturgis Harley Rally.

“Mike never did anything half way.  His longtime colleague in the law F. Lee Bailey once wrote that Mike Klarfeld was a ‘barrister extraordinaire, who is damned near as nuts as I am.’”

Klarfeld’s survivors include Emerald; daughters, Susan, Nancy, Laura and Chloe; a brother, Marshall, and four grandchildren.  Services will be held at  noon Tuesday, March 1,  at the Balboa Park Club with a reception following. The family recommends donations in his memory be made to San Diego Hospice.
