The new officers for the forthcoming year were elected at the last regular meeting. They are Dr. Milton Millman, president; Edmund Herman, 1st vice president; Samuel Bennett, 2nd vice president; Harold P. Lasher, 3rd vice president; Louis Levitt, warden; Dr. Gerald Kobernick, Guardian: Lawrence Rubenstein, recording secretary; Joseph Kaplan, Financial Secretary; Edward Baranov, Treasurer; Trustees: Jack Spatz, Jeremiah Arnoff; Marshall Zucker, Sidney Goldstein, Julius Penn, Irwin Sklar, Sidney Rose.

The installation of the officers will be held on January 15th at the Mission Valley Country Club.  There will be a dinner preceding the Installation, and reservations are requested as soon as possible. You may make reservations by calling Brother Sid Rose at AT 1-7721, or Lou Levitt at Cypress 5-2446.  Those who do not wish to attend the dinner are reminded of the fact that the installation of officers will begin at 8:30  PM, and immediately following the installation there will be dancing until midnight. The affair is open to the public.

The Jewish Community Center in cooperation with the National Council of Jewish Women will sponsor a Golden Age program on Sunday, Dec. 25, 1955, at the Hebrew Home for the Aged.

The Square Dance Group will meet on Jan. 14th, at the Jewish Community Center.

New Life Club

The annual Chanukah party of the New Life Club was held on December 11th, at the Beth Jacob Center. After a greeting by President Carl Friend, the program was taken over by the master of ceremonies, Joe Schwarz.  Mr. Peyser recited an original poem which he had written for the occasion.  Cantor Dubner led the kindling of the lights, assited by Mr. Peyser on the pinao, and Miss Aufrichtig, violinist.

The children received presents and while they were entertained by a movie, the adults were entertained by the singing of Cantor Dubner, Eddy Gumpel and Getta Flaster.

Edith Lavender saw that all the new members felt at home. Dancing and the refreshments served by hostess Ilse Finch topped off a happy Chanukah party.

Mr. and Mrs. E. Thomas received congratulations on their son, Edward’s Bar Mitzvah.

President Rose Brooker held a meeting on December 19th at the home of Mrs. Charles Press to complete arrangements for the Israel Emergency Dinner, scheduled for January 15th.

The dinner will be prepared by Stanley Yukon at the Beth Jacob Center. Co-chairmen for the affair are Mrs. Charles Press and Mrs. Isaac Domnitz. A musical program has been arranged. Earl Fisher, violinist, will play, accompanied by Edith Gates at the piano. The speaker for the evening will be Cele Polichek, Chairman of the Council of Pioneer Women of Los Angeles.

Rose Levenson Segal, 57 years of age, passed away December 16 at a Chula Vista Hospital. She resided at 815 Coronado Court in San Diego and had lived here for 33 years.

Mrs. Segal is survived by two daughters, Mrs. A.R. Cushman and Mrs. Martin Altshuler of San Diego – two sisters, Molly Levenson and Mrs. A.H. McLain of San Diego, and 4 grandchildren. She was a member of Temple Beth Israel.

Funeral Services were held at the Lewis Colonial Mortuary Monday, December 19, at 11;00 a.m. with Rabbi Morton Cohn officiating.  Entombment in Cypress View Mausoleum.

Maurice Rubin, 61, died on Friday, Dec. 16th. Services were held in the Merkley-Austin Mortuary, officiated by Rabbi Monroe Levens of Tifereth Israel Synagogue.  Masonic services were conducted by the Silver Gate Lodge. Burial was in the Home of Peace Cemetery.

Surviving are his widow, Lottie Mozelle Rubin; four sons, Bill, Jack, Robert Maurice and Donald Harry Rubin, and three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Jane Doyle, Mrs. Peggy Peters and Mrs. Earline Stringfellow, and 13 grandchildren.

Sadie S. Levine, 63 years of age, passed away December 12 at a local hospital. She resided at 4517 ½ 56th Street and had lived in San Diego 6 years.

Mrs. Levine is survived by her husband, Samuel Levine—two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Pomeranz of Pasadena and Mrs. Ada Jacobs of San Diego. One son, Arthur Levine of San Diego and 6 Grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at the Home of Peace Cemetery Wednesday, December 14, at 1:00 p.m. with Rabbi Monroe Levens officiating and the Lewis Colonial Mortuary officiating.

Annette Safirstein, 71 years of age, passed away at 4075 54th Street on December 13. Shge had lived in San Diego for 8 years and is survived by one son, Carl Safirstein.

Graveside services were held at Home of Peace Cemetery on Wednesday, December 14 at 2:00 p.m. with Rabbi Monroe Levens officiating and the Lewis Colonial Mortuary conducting.

Two Attend UJA Conference in N.Y.

Two San Diegans left last Thursday to attend the annual Conference of the United Jewish Appeal held in New York on Friday and Saturday, December 16 and 17, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

They are Dr. A.P. Nasatir, president of the San Diego Federation of Jewish Agencies, and Mrs. Alan Soule, executive secretary of the Women’s Division of the United Jewish Fund.

After attending the two-day conference in New York, Dr. Nasatir will fly to Washington D.C. for an American Historical Society meeting.

A king-sized check for nearly one million dollars was handed to tax collector Wilbur Easton as Pacific Telephone’s first installment on its fiscal year tax in San Diego county.

Exact amount of the check is $958,092.61.  Final installment of the annual bill of $1,916,187.25 will be paid in April, 1956.  The total is over $300,000 larger than last year.

Seventeen cents out of every dollar telephone users pay for their service goes for taxes, including these personal property taxes, according to Russell Kliegel, district manager.
