On his 204th birthday, San Diego’s first Jewish settler, Louis Rose, will have a point of land officially dedicated for him at 10 a.m. today (Thursday, March 24) at the foot of Womble Road at the Boat Channel.  City and school officials are scheduled to speak, along with a representative of the German consulate, and  representatives of the Jewish community.  Rose laid out the Roseville section of Point Loma in 1869 and is also was the businessman for whom Rose Canyon was named.

Tifereth Israel Men’s Club hosts a reception at 6 p.m. tonight at the KnB Wine Cellars in the Del Cerro area to watch the Sweet 16 basketball tournament.  To reserve call the congregation office at 619 697-6001.

The Chabad at San Diego State University sponsors a 5-course Shabbat dinner from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., Friday, March 25,  in the “Chabad Lounge, 6115 Montezuma Road.  According to Rabbi Chalom Boudjnah: “We are expecting lots of young professionals to attend this event… ”

Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra, under the baton of David Amos, performs at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 27, at Temple Emanu-El and at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Tifereth Israel Synagogue.  Guest soloist Uri Pianka will play the Samuel Barber Violin Concerto. Pianka is the retired concertmaster of the Israel Philharmonic and Houston Symphony. He will be playing a rare 1704 J.B. Rogerius violin.

Author Marek Halter will discuss his book “The Jewish Odyssey: An Illustrated History,” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, in the Dove Library, 1775 Dove Lane, Carlsbad.  Tickets are $12 for members of the Lawrence Family JCC, and $14 for others.

San Diego Israel Coalition sponsors Buy Israel Goods (BIG) on Wednesday, March 30, to counter an anti-Israel boycott planned by pro-Palestinian forces around the country.  The campaign will be highlighted from 5:30-6:30 pm at  Ralphs- La Jolla at 8677 Villa La Jolla Dr, La Jolla but organizers urge the pro-Israel community to purchase Israeli goods wherever they are sold.

Rebecca Moore, professor of religious studies at San Diego State University, discusses “Jews, Christians and Muslims in Apocalyptic Dialogue,” at 8:30 p.m., Monday, April 4, at the Carlsbad Dove Library, 1775 Dove Lane, Carlsbad, and at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 13, at the Coronado Library, 630 Orange Avenue.  The lectures are sponsored by the Agency for Jewish Education.

Choreographer John Malashock, in collaboration with the San Diego Museum of Art, will be presenting “The Floating World,” a high-tech dance and art collaboration, on April 8th.  His dance company is now involved in an “all-or-nothing” fundraising campaign for $10,000 to enhance the performances with special lighting effects.  If the goal is not reached, money pledged for this will be returned to donors, and performances without the enhancements will be given.

Motivational speaker Cynthia Ryk will keynote a conference co-sponsored by Jewish Family Service entitled “Regain Your Self-Confidence: Take Charge of Your Job Search” from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Tuesday, April 12, at the La Jolla Presbyterian Church, 7715 Draper Ave.   Another speaker will be Randy C. A panel on the revolutions that have spread throughout North Africa and the Middle East will be hosted at 12:15 p.m., Thursday, April 14,  by the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice on the University of San Diego campus.  Speakers are Lee Ann Otto, Necla Tschirgi and Avi Spiegel, all PhD.s

Chef Matt Gordon of Urban Solace, Sam “The Cooking Guy” Zien, and restaurant critic Steve Silverman team up for an urban seder, at sundown, Tuesday, April 19, at Urban Solace, 3823 30th Street, with proceeds from the $90 per adult, $75 per child dinner benefitting Project Sarah of Jewish Family Service, a project combatting domestic abuse.  The kosher menu includes Jidori Chicken Liver Pate, Charoset  and House-Made Gefilte Fish followed by a four-course dinner paired with a selection of West Coast wines.  For information

Rabbi Yael Ridberg will be formally installed as the spiritual leaer of Congregation Dor Hadash during the Reconstructionist congregation’s scholar in residence weekend May 13-14.  Featured speaker during the weekend will be Tamar Kamionkowski, chair of the department of Biblical Civilization at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College of Philadelphia.

Registrations are now being accepted for the Ruby Schulman Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by Jewish Family Service at the Maderas Golf Club, on Thursday, June 16.  The proceeds will be used for a variety of JFS programs including the support of an elderly Holocuast survivor to helping feed military families at Camp Pendleton.
