Famed Correspondent Will Present Report on Middle East March 13th

Edward R. Murrow’s “See It Now” hour-and-a-half report on the international crisis in the Middle East, with special emphasis on Egypt and Israel, will be broadcast on Tuesday, March 13 over KFMB-TV from 8:30 -10:00 pm. Morrow and “See It Now” co-producer, Fred W. Friendly, returned last week from the Middle East where they spent 11 days in Israel, alone, photographing thousands of feet of film in every corner of the country.
The program will feature interviews with Premier David Ben-Gurion in Israel and Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt.
Milton Roberts, general chairman of the 1956 United Jewish Fund campaign, and Mrs. Milton Roberts, chairman of the Women’s Division, urgently request that members of the Jewish community invite their friends to their homes the evening of Mar. 13 to see and hear this report on the Middle East crisis.
The Campaign Speakers’ committee will supply leaders for after-the-show informal discussion if hostesses for the gatherings will call the Fund office, BE 2-5172.

Council To Present “Heaven on Earth”Fashion Show Mar. 6

On Tuesday, March 6, at a noon luncheon meeting in the Grand Ballroom of the El Cortez Hotel, the National Council of Jewish Women will present a fashion show entitled “San Diego-Heaven on Earth,” in which Mayor Dail will present the key of the city to an “Angel” portrayed by Grechen Voll, ballerina of the Drury Lane players. The luncheon is being given for the benefit of the Council Thrift Shop, and guests bringing a package will be allowed fifty cents off the price of the luncheon.
Jerry Lee Pecht, radio program director, will act as Master of Ceremonies with Shirley Bradley, as fashion commentator for Ballard & Brockett. Barbara Johnson, Miss No. Park; Gay Cowie, Fairest of the Fair, and Maureen Connolly Brinker will model, in addition to members of the Council. A zoo setting will feature children’s clothing.
Tek Osborne of the Globe Theater and Martha Gene of Starlight Opera will sign accompanied by Pauline Gleason.
Mrs. Milton Effron is in charge of programming; Mrs. Ben Lemson and Mrs. Morton Kantor are co-chairmen of the Fashion Show; Mrs. Sheldon Sackheim is in charge of production. The original script was written by Mrs. Edward Merkin.

Women Leaders Set Date for U.J.F. Luncheon

Mrs. Milton Roberts, chairman of the 1956 Women’s Division of the United Jewish Fund announced this week the date set for the first affair of the women’s campaign.
Mrs. Abe Ratner and Mrs. Nathaniel Ratner, co-chairmen of the initial fun raising event, have set April 5 for the Big Gifts Luncheon to which will be invited the $350-and-over contributors of the Women’s Division.
Mrs. Henry Newman, Chairman of the National Women’s Division for 1956 will be guest speaker.

Senator Humphrey To Speak At U.J.F. Pace Setters Dinner

One of the most dramatic and colorful figures on America’s political scene, U.S. Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, of Minnesota, will speak at the United Jewish Fund Campaign Pace Setters’ Dinner in the ballroom of El Cortez Hotel, Sunday, March 25, 6:30 p.m.
Harry Sugarman, Pace-Setter chairman, said that invitations for the affair will be in the mail this week. Sugarman stated, “Senator Humphrey, who as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee endeavored to formulate a friendly and progressive policy towards the young Jewish state, should prove an enlightening and gifted guest.”
Senator Humphrey has been in the forefront of efforts to modify the McCarren-Walter Immigration Act which he opposed when it was introduced in the Senate in 1953. He has been active in developing programs for civil rights legislation, housing and slum clearance, labor management relations, agriculture and government reorganizations, and school construction.
The goal of the two-fold campaign will be close to $250,000 of which $51,600 is for the Special Fund of the United Jewish Appeal for the resettlement in Israel of 45,000 Jews from turbulent North Africa.
Milton Roberts, general campaign chairman, pointed out that in launching this double campaign, the San Diego United Jewish Fund had departed from its practice of past years. He explained that “growing tension and economic displacement experienced by Jews in Morocco and Tunisia is leading to the heaviest inflow of immigration to Israel at time when Israel’s people have been forced to devote their resources toward meeting the threat of aggression by Communist arming of Egypt.”

For the information of all Jewish organizations and individuals the Southwest Jewish Press is publishing important United Jewish Fund Campaign dates which have been set, as announced at this time by Milton Roberts, Campaign Chairman. In keeping with the tradition established in San Diego for the last twenty years organizations are asked to respect those dates and not to have any conflicting affairs on the dates set for major Fund meetings. Individuals are asked to refrain from having social affairs which might conflict with these dates. (These dates subject to change).

Assemblyman Sees No Tax Increase

Assemblyman Sheridan Hegland left Sunday for Sacramento, where he is attending hearings on the budget being conducted by the Ways and Means Committee of which he is a member.
“I do not anticipate any increase in State taxes,” Hegland said. “State income has exceeded predictions and I doubt if there will be any request for tax increases. In any event, I will oppose any ncrease in State taxes at the Budget Session.”

New Center Head

William B. Schwartz was elected president of the Jewish Community Center at a board meeting Feb. 23. He succeeds Edward Breitbard.
Long active in community affairs, he is a member of the executive board of the United Jewish Fund and has been named Campaigner’s Division chairman of this year’s Fund drive. He is a past president of Lasker Lodge, board member of the Federation of Jewish Agencies, and members of the North Park Lions Club and Business Club.
In accepting the presidency, Mr. Schwartz said, “You have given me a serious task to perform which can only be adequately accomplished by the cooperation of all members of the community. This is a decisive year in the history of the San Diego Jewish Community Center. We intend to complete our plans, start construction of the new Center, and have it completed before 1857. This is the goal we have set for ourselves.”
Other officers elected are Maury Novak, Sidney Rose, and Leonard Zlotoff, vice-presidents; Seymour Rabin, treasurer; and Maxwell Kaufman, secretary. Executive board members are Edward Breitbard, Robin Horrow, Mack Esterson, Harry Wax, Alfred Solomon, Morris W. Douglas, John Ruskin and MOrrie S. Kraus.

Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Feldstein recently spent nine days in New Orleans, at Mardi Gras time. While touring the city they visited the Touro Synagogue. The late Rabbi Moise Bergman, who married them in San Diego, was formerly a rabbi in the old and historical synagogue.

Lee and Morrie Douglas had the thrill of seeing daughter Linda’s play, which was performed by the Freshman class at Pomona College. Linda wrote the script, the lyrics for the songs and helped direct. Her fellow freshmen presented her with two dozen roses in appreciation.

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Ehrlich of New York, bother-in-law and sister of Mr. Irving Stone, visited San Diego after a month’s vacation in Mexico, before returning to New York. They saw their nephew, Lenny, for the first time.

In spite of the double-cross by the weather man last week end, Julia Kaufman managed to impress her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Rindler of New York City, with some of the highlights of San Diego.

San Diego homes are now being decorated with “originals” painted by members of the family. At the recent J.C.C. dinner an interesting collection of paintings executed by Senior Adults was exhibited. Many women, as a change from Pan, have formed classes and receive private instruction. Others attend ofne of the many courses offered by the Adult Education Program. Esther Moorsteen recently won a blue ribbon for a picture she painted at the Midway Adult Center.

Schwartz-Lasky Wedding Held

Mr. and Mrs. David Schwartz of San Diego announce the wedding of their son, Irwin, to Lorraine Lasky, of Fresno, Calif, daughter of Mrs. Sam Spector of Las Vegas. The marriage was performed by Rabbi Monroe Levens on February 19th, at Tifereth Israel Synagogue.
Jerome Schwartz, brother of the groom, was best man, and MRs. Bernard Gotfried, of Fresno, Calif., was the matron of honor.
A reception for 150 guests was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Schwartz. Mr. Jerome Barr, of New York City, cousin of the bridegroom, was among the many out of town guests.
After a honeymoon in Acapulco, Mexico, the couple will reside at 2840 N. 1st St., Fresno, where Irwin Schwartz is a supervisor for the Mayfair Markets.

Bay City B.B. To Hold “Candy Ball”

The San Diego Bay City B’nai B’rith Women will climax a year’s charitable activities with the “Candy Ball,” their Sixth Annual Donor Dinner Dance. Mrs. Max Felsman, chapter President, announced that the event will take place on Sunday evening, March 11, at the Mission Valley Country Club.
The evening will surpass all other affairs in the chapter’s history, according to Mr. Eugene Sacks, Chairman, and her co-chairman, Mrs. Harold Garvin.
Following the 6 p.m. dinner, a performance by the Bellcantor Quartet of Los Angeles and dancing to the orchestra of Tony Mareno has been planned by the Entertainment committee consisting of Mrs. Abe Hollandersky, Mrs. Seymour Okmin and Mrs. Harold Rosenblatt.

Both Barbara and Benjamin are majoring in Elementary Education at State College. They reside at 4325 Park Blvd., in San Diego.
