UJF Campaign Opens Sunday, March 25; Senator Speaks on Israel as Israel Crisis Grows More Critical
Southwestern Jewish Press, March 16, 1956, Page 1
United States Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota will be the honored guest and principal speaker at the Pace-Setters Dinner on Sunday evening, March 25th, Milton Y. Roberts, General Campaign Chairman, announced.
The Advanced Gifts Dinner meeting to be chaired by Harry Sugarman will serve as a preliminary to the opening of the 1956 “double-barreled” drive for funds for Israel, overseas, local and national needs, and the United Jewish Appeal Special Fund for $51,600.
Senator Humphrey, one of the most dynamic and colorful figures on America’s present political scene, will speak on the subject of “Israel in crisis.” A staunch friend of Israel, Senator Humphrey has recently played a key role as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the formulation of a friendly and progressive policy towards the young Jewish State.
Those who have followed the Senator’s career know that he had been in the forefront of efforts to modify the McCarran-Walter Immigration Act which he strongly opposed when it was introduced in the Senate in 1953.
Pointing out that this year the campaign is double pronged, Chairman Roberts stated that we have a double job first to raise money for the regular campaign and secondly to meet our commitment of $51,600 for the United Jewish Appeal Special Fund for Israel.
Reservations for the dinner honoring Senator Humphrey may be made by calling the United Jewish Fund office, BE 2-5172.

Famed Israeli General Here
Southwestern Jewish Press, March 16, 1956, Pages 1, 7
Brig. General Yigal Allon of Israel, has been receiving a warm welcome in the United States. He alighted from his plane in san Diego wearing a 10-gallon hat, a gift from Texans.
In addition to his news conference and a TV interview, Gen. Allon attended two big house meetings on March 13th. His visit on that day was particularly timely because of his appearance on Ed Murrow’s review of the Arab-Israel situation shown that evening. Gen. Allon, a second generation Israeli, and one of the nation’s heroes, lives in the fishing kibbutz shown on the TV program. Last year he was elected to Israel’s Parliament.
At the home of Max Rabinowitz, where forty people had gathered, the General answered questions. The result was that pledges made last year were spontaneously doubled. The additional amount will go toward the U.J.A. “Special Survival Fund.”
General Allon also attended a meeting held by the Military Division of the United Jewish Fund campaign in the home of Jack Binderman. Chaplain Elihu Rickel, chairman of the group, reported that the fifteen couples present tripled their donations of the year before.
