With The Guardians
Southwestern Jewish Press, April 27, 1956, Page 4

By Morrie Pomeranz

The monthly Board of Directors meeting was to be held at the Mission Valley Country Club on April 19th—undoubtedly one of the more high spirited meetings in many months—The Ways and Means Committee had formulated plans for an major raffle and an elaborate dinner dance (non profit) to be held within the next five or six weeks.  It was suggested that Guardians visit the Hebrew Home for the Aged primarily to see the splendid progress effected these past six months; the fourteen guests at the home would certainly welcome an occasional visitor – for there is no finer therapy for an older person than the warm smile of a friend – a friend who has not forgotten.

*
Recently, following the revealing article in Life magazine relative to the professional golfers, a luncheon group was in discussion to who was the outstanding pressure player amongst the golfer Guardians.  The conversation, as it habitually does, waxed heatedly – names were kicked about –stories were told and retold—individual scores and miracle shots were listed for comparative purposes.  When the smoke cleared one name one name shone brilliantly above all as the golfer who repeatedly exhibits his finest games when “the chips are down” – we salute Dave Block.

*
New laurels, indeed indicative of the man’s many faceted talents, have been bestowed upon one of our citizens by Governor Goodwin Knight. The appointment entails considerable effort on  the part of the appointee who was singled out for this honor because of his unusual qualifications. Thus, as a director for the County Agriculture Commission for the 22nd District, Lew Lipton becomes the recipient of a much-coveted assignment.
*
The next regular dinner meeting will be held on May 3rd (6:30 p.m.) at the Mission Valley Country Club.  Members are urged to attend since tickets will be available for the fund raising affair. With this realization that this is Guardian’s first social function in several years, a particular good attendance is essential.  Remember—all profits go to the Hebrew Home for the Aged.

Sen. Estes Kefauver Makes Friends Here

Southwestern Jewish Press, April 27, 1956, Page 5

Senator Estes Kefauver, d-Tenn., brought his campaign as Democratic candidate for the President of the United States to San Diego County last week. The Senator’s Party was met by his lo al committee headed by Mrs. Zelia Crown, 30th District Chairman.

This reporter found Democratic candidate friendly, frank and obviously tired.  His straightforward answers to several questions put to him at a press conference stamped him as a man of liberal outlook.

In reply to our question on the Middle East, he stated;  “We have a moral obligation to support and maintain the State of Israel.”  On segregation, he remarked that his stand has cost him the support of many leaders in the South but that “the South cannot secede from the Supreme Court.”

Interview with George Cheney

Southwestern Jewish Press, April 27, 1956, Page 6

One thing impelling George Cheney to run for Congress from the 30th Congressional District was his desire to afford the people a choice of a man with absolutely no bias or prejudice. His successful 16-year record in industrial relations certainly demonstrates he has no prejudice against labor, employers and no race, no religious or political prejudice.  “No man can succeed in industrial relations who believes in discrimination of any kind. There is no difference between the discredited notions of race superiority or white supremacy, and an anti-union or anti-employer bias.”  All are equally false and offensive to him.  If he is sent to Congress from the 30th Congressional District he declares he will reprssent all people, Jews and non-Jews, white and colored, Democrats and Republicans, and upon this platform he solicits your vote at the coming June 5th Primary.  – M.K.

Jr. Charity League
Southwestern Jewish Press, April 27, 1956, Page 6

First treasury gift from an organization was received last week by the united Jewish Fund, according to Mrs. Milton Y. Roberts, Chairman of the Women’s Division. The Junior Charity League, one of San Diego’s oldest organizations, forwarded the contribution for $75 to the 1956 campaign as a treasury gift from the organization, and not as a gift for the women of the group. The gift was made, according to Mrs. Paul Nestor, secretary of the League, as a small token of their feelings toward the needs overseas and especially in Israel.

Treasury gifts from other organizations in the community would be most appreciated, Mrs. Roberts stated, but must also be understood that a treasury gift does not relieve the individual member from shouldering his responsibility to make a gift to this great cause.
