Jewish Women give and Girls give back

LA JOLLA, California (Press Release) – The Jewish Women’s Foundation (JWF), a program of the Jewish Community Foundation, touting more than 100 members held its annual luncheon meeting at the home of Hanna Gleiberman last Tuesday.  The event featured keynote speaker Christine Grumm, President and CEO of the San Francisco-based Women’s Funding Network, an organization that holds $535 million in funds to assist women and girls in 26 countries throughout the world.

“This is a very important moment in history for women,” said Grumm.  “Women have never had more education, information or money in order to change the world.  We need to seize this opportunity.”

Indeed the members of the JWF have seized the opportunity.  Jewish Women’s Foundation Chair, Jennifer Levitt spoke about the new initiative the Women’s Foundation embarked on 18 months ago to promote self-esteem for Jewish teenage girls living in San Diego County.  The JWF awarded more than $245,000 in grants for the effort to support five programs throughout the county.

Jessica Nare from “Girls Give Back”, a program run by Jewish Family Service and one of the five organizations awarded a grant, gave members an update on their progress since the program’s inception. Nare said the program is getting a tremendous response with 26 girls enrolled for the summer institute and 10 enrolled for the fall program.  Girls Give Back promotes leadership and empowerment skills in high school age girls through service learning projects.

“We agree with Chris that this is a time of great opportunity to make change for women and girls in our community,” commented Levitt.  “Through our new initiatives we believe that we will help empower girls in our community to seize on the endless opportunities for them.  This is a very exciting time!”
