La Jolla Playhouse Announces Season

The La Jolla Playhouse opens its tenth season June 26 with the comedy, “Bus Stop.” Also planned are productions of the two Strindberg one-act masterpieces, “Miss Julie” and “The Stronger” and the musical comedy, “Pal Joey,” starring dancer Gene Nelson.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public on June 16 at the La Jolla and San Diego box offices. The Playhouse plans to produce a total of five shows this season; two of them have yet to be announced.

New Entertainers at Secret Harbor

“The Leaders,” a band and entertainer group which has just closed an engagement at the Brazilian Room of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, opened Monday, June 4, at the Secret Harbor.
The three entertainers, Ralston Ayers, Paul Beaver and Vernon Haywood, play a total of 23 instruments. They will appear nightly from 9 to 1:30 at the Secret Harbor. Other recent engagements have been at the Miami Deauville, the Nevada Biltmore and the Santa Barbara Biltmore.

“The King and I” Opens Starlight Season June 28

Star-Light Opera will open its eleventh season of outdoor musicals in Balboa Park Bowl June 28 with one of the great hits of all time. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s masterpiece, “The King and I.” Following at two week intervals will come d Koven’s perennial favorite, “Robin Hood”; John Strauss’s gay and froth, “Rosalinda”; Vincent Youman’s nautical musical of guts, gals and gags, “Hit the Deck”; and for a closer, the musical Arabian night, “Kismet.” Each will be given eight performances, Thursday thru Sunday, for two successive weeks.
Great interest is center on the debut of Christine Krooskos as Lady Thiang, the Queen Mother. She recently won top honors in the San Francisco Opera auditions here.
Equally strong casts have been selected for the other four shows. Most of last year’s favorites will be back, with many fine new voices and personalities making their Star-Light debuts this summer.
Seats for all performances, including many excellent season reservations, may still be had at Star-Light’s downtown box office. Particularly choice seats are available for Thursday and Sunday nights, generally shunned by those who must be up and at work on weekday mornings.

The Second Annual Donor Luncheon of the City of Hope Senior Auxiliary will be held at the Lafayette Hotel on Wednesday, June 20th, at 12 noon. Goldie Schusterman is Chairman and Bessye Siegel, co-Chairman. Mimi Karpman and Jackie Parker are in charge of decorations. Others on the Donor Committee are President Ethel Berwin, Esther Schwartz, Helen Medak, Ruth Arnoff, Bertha Friedman, Cookie Bloomfield, Gladys Tappan, Marion Resnick, Sam and Anna Brooks and Jeanne Camiel. Matilda Barsha will present a fine program featuring Luba Linn and Bari O’Hara of Hollywood.
The doors of the City of Hope have always been open to those who suffer and they have never been asked to pay.

At a luncheon meeting held at the El Cortez Hotel on June 12, Rabbi Monroe Levens installed the new officers of Tifereth Israel Sisterhood during an impressive ceremony which was centered around the theme, “The Key to Happiness.” The following officers were installed: Pres., Mrs. Lewis Solomon; Vice –Pres., Mesdames Henry Price, Morris Slayen and Louis Feller; Rec. Sec., Mrs. Joan Feurzeig; Corr. Sec. Mrs. Daniel Orlansky; Fin. Sec. Mrs. Joe Gibson; Treas. Mrs Leonard Effron; Auditor, Mrs. Isador Teacher; Board Members—Mesdames Edward Addleson, Henry Appelman; M.S. Berlin, Sam Lennett, Julius Levin, Charles Sorkin, Irving Dean, Harry Raymore and I.A. Silberman.

California Western University has been accredited by the Western College Association, a recognition of its increasing stature in the academic world. Cal Western is the only accredited Protestant university in an area that contains almost a million and a half people. Richard Silberman, Kay Lab Executive, To Address Jewish War Vets in S.D.

Richard Silberman, Vice Pres of Kay Lab, will be the guest speaker at the next monthly meeting of San Diego Post 185, Jewish War Vets on Thursday, June 28, at 8:30 p.m. at War Memorial Bldg., Balboa Park.
His subject will be “Electronics and Electronic Investments” and will be illustrated by an interest short color movie, narrated by Thomas Mitchell.
All member are urged to attend and bring a guest serviceman or war veteran.
Adolph Brodman was honored with the appointment as Sergeant at Arms of the All City Memorial Day Service held at Foort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
Comrades Seckler, Apelman, Grossman, Mintz and Sam Rose were delegates to the Department of California Convention on June 9 at Santa Barbara. A report on the Convention will be given at the next
meeting.
