With plans for the new Community Center Building to be located on the site of 54th and University nearing completion, special effort is being made
to secure payments on the 5 year pledges immediately, according to Seymour Rabin, Center treasurer.
Though over $50,000 has already been collected on the $156,000 pledged to theCenter, immediate payments of the amount due will have to be made in order for the Center to begin its building in September or October as planned in its schedule.

Jewish War Vets and Auxiliary News
Southwestern Jewish Press, June 29, 1956, Page 6
Santa Barbara Convention Hi-lites: The 1957 Dept. of California Convention is slated for San Diego, thanks to our elder statesmen Harry Appelman and Sam Rose.
You’ve never seen wheeling and dealing unless you watched our popular Auxiliary President, Jennie Turner, in action. The word is that it is Jennie, hands down, for 1957 Dept. Auxiliary President.
The Post and Auxiliary will join hands in the annual V-J Day, August 14, Poppy Sale. All funds are spent exclusively for Veteran and Servicemen Rehabilitation in San Diego.
On June 19, the Post and Auxiliary, led by Chairman Rose and Jennie Turner, brought cheer to the T.B. Ward of the Naval Hospital. Over 180 men of all faiths shared in the refreshments and visitations.
A salute to Harry Aronoff for the tremendous job he did with the Post 185 Booth at the ground-breaking of the Jewish Community Center. The Post has pledged its full support for J.C.C and hopes to be able to raise funds for a room.
Regrets: A last minute conflict in Jewish community programming compelled the Post and Auxiliary to cancel the scheduled talk by Dick Silberman of Kay Lab. Do I recall reading about a Program Clearing Committee at the Jewish Community Council?
The Post is planning a popularity and beauty contest for the honor of being chosen Miss Jewish War Veteran of 1957. The winner will be the Queen of the 1957 convention.

Too Much Sun Harmful Says Medic
Southwestern Jewish Press, June 29, 1956, Page 6
Overdoing the California habit of sunbathing sometimes can bring on a case of cancer of the skin, Dr. David Miller, First Vice President, San Diego Branch, American Cancer Society, cautioned today.
Dr. Miller said repeated sunburn is one of the commonest of the known causes of cancer –but added that “sunshine in
moderation is more likely to good than harm. Certainly there is nothing to fear from sensible exposure to the sun.”
Nevertheless anyone whose complexion is very fair would be well advised to shun the sun at least a part of the time. Research has shown that
susceptibility to sun-caused skin cancer is less among those with pigmented skins, or with skins that tan easily.
Fortunately Dr. Miller pointed out, skin cancer is the most easily cured of all cancers. Ninety five out of a hundred skin cancers can be cured if treated in time, he said.
“There is no need for worry over an isolated case of sunburn,” Dr. Miller said. “But if the irritation is constantly repeated, cancer could in time get its start.”
