“Pal Joey” Musical At La Jolla Playhouse
Southwestern Jewish Press, July 27, 1956, Page 6

Shapely, talented dancing girls, a star-studded cast and the tuneful music of
Richard Rodgers have combined to set La Jolla Playhouse spinning with
enthusiasm as the famed summer theatre celebrates its tenth anniversary with
its first production of a musical play, “Pal Joey.”

So popular is the reception of this production, which stars Gene Nelson, Benay
Venuta, Sue Carson and George “behind the eight ball” O’Hanlon, that the
Playhouse has scheduled an extra performance for Monday night, July 30th,
which is usually the actor’s night out.

The La Jolla production is directed by Carl Shain with Nelson staging the
choreography and musical numbers.  John
Blankenship designed the sets and is responsible for the lighting, all of which
are in large part responsible for the brilliance of the lavish production, one
of the most colorful in Playhouse history. The Playhouse closes August 5.

Rosalinda Next For Star-Light Opera

Southwestern Jewish Press, July 27, 1956, Page 6

“Rosalinda,” Star-Light Opera’s contributions to the Fiesta, is the living
embodiment of the fiesta spirit.  Light
and frothy; gay and romantic, melodic and singable; the Johann Strauss
favorite, a new English version of “Die Fiedermaus” is ideal Fiesta
entertainment.

Laid in Vienna, world capital of wine, women and song, “Rosalinda” is brimming
with sparkle and zest of rare vintage champagne.  It was chosen for the important midsummer spot
because it is the perfect complement to all the many other fine attractions
offered San Diegans and their visitors this summer.

Dancing will be an important ingredient of “Rosalinda,” particularly the big,
sweeping ballet to the “Fiedermaus Waltz.”
Settings and costumes will further accent the spirit of mirth and melody
of this all-time favorite of lovers of light opera.

“Rosalinda” will play in Balboa Park Bowl July 26 through 29 and August 2, 3, 4
and 5.  Curtain time is 8:30 sharp.
