Proposition 4 Supporters Cite Reasons for Measure
Southwestern Jewish Press, October 5, 1956, Page 10
By his dictatorial seizure of the Suez Canal, Egyptian Premier Nasser is “playing with the kind of matches than can light the tinder box of the world and lead to a third world war,” Rear Admiral John R. McKinney of the National Defense Committee for Proposition 4, declared in a statement made public today.
Admiral McKinney was joined by Attorney Louis Baker, prominent Jewish community leader, and Dan A. Kimball, Southern California co-chairman of the Citizens Conservation Committee for Proposition 4 in emphasizing the importance of the oil conservation measure in terms of national security and economic benefits to California citizens.
The threat of war and the fact that 80 percent of the world’s known oil is located in Arab countries sympathetic to Nasser make it imperative that the United States and California do everything possible to increase domestic supply of oil, Admiral McKinney pointed out.
“So far as California is concerned,” he said, “the Suez situation stresses the far-reaching significance of the oil conservation act, Proposition 4 on the November ballot, because this measure is designed to stop waste and double California’s recoverable supply of oil.
In addition to the fact that Proposition 4 is vital for defense, the citizens committee leader stated, it is also essential to provide adequate supplies of locally produced oil which will keep gas prices down.
“Oil produced under provisions of Proposition 4 will cost less than oil imported from anywhere in the world,” Kimball reported. “California now has an oil shortage and must import oil to supply demand. More low-cost California oil means less need for high-cost foreign oil.”
