An Open Letter to the Jewish Community
Southwestern Jewish Press, October 19, 1956, Page 5
Dear Friends:
We have been advised that Aba Eban, Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, has been recalled for a special conference in Jerusalem.
I am not given to overstatement or to alarmist thinking. But it is obvious that decision in the Middle East is at hand.
We have a city-wide dinner for Israel Tuesday, October 23rd in the El Cortez Hotel. I say to you and to all members of this community that it is the most important single affair we have sponsored.
His Excellency Reuven Shiloah, Israel’s Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States, will replace Mr. Eban as the guest of honor on October 23rd. He will be joined by Dr. Avraham Biran, Israel’s Consul General for the Western States.
It is most fortunate that these leaders of Israel can be with us. Mr. Shiloah served as special aid to Prime Minister David Ben Gurion–and as Special Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense. An eloquent speaker, the Minister Plenipotentiary will bring us the last-minute word on developments in Israel.
October 23rd will be our chance to show Israel and our own country that we stand united in this hour of extreme emergency.
Please call the office at BElmont 4-2189–or fill out the reservation card you received in your invitation and mail it immediately. Let me know that we can count on you — that Israel can count on you — to be with us.
Every single one of us stands in the front lines now.
Sincerely, Jack O. Gross, Dinner Chairman

Prop 4 Denounced as “Dangerous, Monopolistic”
Southwestern Jewish Press, October 19, 1956, Page 6
Joseph D. Shane, well known community leader, today urged the defeat of Proposition No. 4, oil control measure on the November ballot.
Describing it as “an abuse of the initiative procedure,” he declared, “Sponsors of the highly complex bill, in refusing to take it to the state legislature, have surrounded the issue with a great deal of confusion and propaganda claims.
“Few citizens have any knowledge of the highly technical matters upon which Proposition No. 4 is based. The big oil companies supporting the measure already have spent millions of dollars in an effort to obscure the issue.
“If they succeed in getting the bill passed, its basic provisions, many of which are open to serious question, would be “frozen into law, not subject to amendment or repeal by the state legislature
“Further, Section 8 (A) of the Act itself contains specific exemptions from anti-trust prosecution. This raises the question of monopoly control by a handful of international oil companies, which together produce less than 10 percent of their oil in California. Their business is primarily oil importing, with their greatest investments in the Middle East and Arabian oil.
“California Attorney General Edmund G. “Pat” Brown has pointed out many of the dangerous features of Proposition No. 4 and he has announced publicly that he will vote against it.
“I urge a NO vote on Proposition No. 4,” Shane said.

Urges Passage of Proposition 13
Southwestern Jewish Press, October 19, 1956, Page 6
Mrs. Harold Garvin, S.D. Democratic California Legislative Chairman, urges a “yes” vote on Proposition 13. This measure proposes the repeal of the Alien Land Law which prevents non-citizens from owning real property.
The State Supreme Court declared this law unconstitutional in 1952, but since it was placed on the books by an initiative measure, it can only be repealed by the voters.
