Is There a Jewish Vote?
Southwestern Jewish Press, November 16, 1956, Page 5

By Harry Golden in the California Israelite

The political preferences of the Jewish voters, of course, are determined by the same factors as those of the rest of the American citizens; –geography, occupation, trade-union or employers’ affiliations, economic status, etc. If an avowed anti-semite ran for public office, all the Jews outside the insane asylum would probably vote against him regardless of his party label; just as the bankers would gang up on any candidate who was in favor of abolishing banks. Which reminds me of the time the late Senator Willis Smith ran against Senator Frank P. Graham, and in the run-off, the Smith managers produced printed surveys which indicated that most of the Negroes had voted for Graham. The Smith managers were indignant about this.  Their idea of the true American patriot was the fellow who voted against his own interests.  Who does that?  A Scandinavian name is a great political asset in the Northwest, even into the third and fourth generation of American living; and I dare a Protestant to run for the City Council in some of the districts of Boston or on New York’s West Side. For that matter I dare a Roman Catholic to run for Governor or Senator in any of the states of our South.

But all the surveys, polls, and books explaining how the Jews vote “like everybody else” are a waste of time and money. You are dealing her with a renunciation of logic in the area of one of the “constants” of western civilization, anti-semitism.  The least effective remedy is logic.  I remember when folks got mad at me for my review of a book published by a Jewish organization. The book listed the Jewish casualties of World War II name, rank and serial number, in categories of “killed in action,” “wounded, ” “missing, ” prisoner of war;” and it was an impressive book. But meaningless. The “good” people of our society were genuinely puzzled that such a thing is necessary; and the anti-semite laughed louder than ever, “You were all in the Quartermaster Corps.”  And that, my friends, is that.  This involves all the levels of our culture; war, politics, business; and let us take the “Jewish” nose.  On the Duke of Wellington they called it “patrician” and on Anna Magnani it is called “classical.”

Consider also the fact that our American society literally worships the successful business man, and elevates him to Sainthood if he happens to possess the two traits which America extols above all other virtues (a) a lowly beginning and (b) thrift.  But if the guy’s name is Sam Goldberg these very virtues become something entirely different; –“stingy,” “money-grabbing,” “shrewd,” and “nothing but a pants presser before he became rich.”

Which brings me back to the “Jewish vote” and the ubiquitous Arab student who asks the same question at every forum around here on the Israel-Arab situation: “How about the Jewish vote?”  Now this is funny.  The Arabs who do not even have a word for the “ballot” have suddenly become experts on the democratic system of voting. But are we not foolish to argue this on their terms?  Why NOT a Jewish vote where the interests of Israel are concerned?  Suppose the Saudi-Arabians had a fight with Scotland; whom would the Scotch-Presbyterians here vote for — the Saudi Arabians?

But when the Arab student sneers that the “Jewish vote” influences the policy of our Government in the Middle East, he shows a complete ignorance of our history and traditions. It pre-supposes the idea that if there were not any Jewish voters in America, the United States would automatically support the Arabs. Why?  There is nothing in our history to even remotely support such a contention. Incidentally, the State of Israel is the first country in the Middle East where a new foreign minister is escorted to his inauguration by his predecessor. This has not yet happened anywhere in the Arab world. When a new king or a new minister takes office in the Arab world his predecessor is either dead, or in jail, or if he is lucky, he was able to make it to Switzerland in time.
