Hungarian Jewish Refugees Aided by United Jewish Fund
Southwestern Jewish Press, January 25, 1957, Page 1
Fourteen Hungarian refugees have arrived in San Diego through the efforts of the United Jewish Fund in the past two weeks, according to Zel Camiel of the Fund’s Emigre Committee.
Manpower tohelp in the resettlement and integration of the Hungarian refugees was activated by the Emigre Committee, the Jewish Social Service Agency and the San Diego Section of the Council of Jewish Women.
Though the resettlement of Hungarian refugees is the responsibility of the United Jewish Fund, officially recognized by the United States State Department as a responsible community organization to re-settle and help integrate refugees, many phases of the re-settlement and integration program are facilitated with the help of the Jewish Social Service Agency, and the local Council group.
“Seven of the refugees are responsibilities of their families and relatives in San Diego,” Camiel said.
It was pointed out, however, that the number of families the community will be able to accept depends solely on the amount of money which will be raised by te 1957 United Jewish Fund Campaign. This will determine how much can be budgeted for this local program.
Council women who helped on the program were: Mrs. Albert A. Hutler, Chairman; Mrs. Sidney Silverman, Mrs. Harry Felson, Mrs. Saide Haimsohn, Mrs. Burt Ross, Mrs. Ben Lemson, MRs. Jerome Greenstein, Mrs. Dennis Price and Mrs. Alex Wise.
Mrs. Hutler explained that the Council women aided in providing housing and clothing, met the individuals at the airport, escorted them to their homes, provided interpreters and secured furniture.
Professional staff of the Jewish Social Service Agency provided counseling and worked with the personal problems which are encountered by the families in helping them adjust to the community.
All expenses incurred for the support of housing, medical care and for and other problems which arise are borne by the United Jewish Fund Emigre Committee, which is financed through the Fund Campaign.
Through the Council and the Jewish Social Service Agency, plans are made for teaching the adults English, entering the children in school, and preparing the immigrant for citizenship.
The Emigre Committee has advised that as soon as the families are settled, additional families may be accepted in San Diego.

Southwestern Jewish Press, January 25, 1957, Pages , 31
“Jews are on the road again” … “Jews are crossing borders again.” … “Jews are being expropriated again.” … “There will be marching feet of Jews again.”
With these words, Dr. Walter Ornstein and Victor Schulman, General Campaign Co-Chairmen, announced the official goal of the United Jewish Fund, which will open on April 1.
$295,000 for Local, National, Overseas and Israel needs and for the United Jewish Appeal Emergency Rescue Fund will be the mark that San Diego Jewry will shoot at in the 1957 campaign.
At the same time the chairmen announced that Rabbis Morton J. Cohn, Baruch Stern and Commander Elihu Rickel, Chaplain Corps, USN, have accepted top campaign responsibility for the drive.
Spiritual leader of Temple Beth Israel, Rabbi Cohn, has accepted the chairmanship of the Manpower and Worker’s Education Committee, which will recruit workers during the month of January and February.
Rabbi Stern, spiritual leader of Beth Jacob Synagogue, will head the Speaker’s Committee, recruiting and training speakers who will talk before organizations on behalf of the United Jewish Fund.
The Military Division will be headed by Chaplain Rickel, Assistant Chaplain of the 11th Naval District, who had already begun to formulate plans for the participation of military personnel stationed in the San Diego area in the drive.

Many of our subscribers have called to our attention the fact that they have been receiving copies of a Los Angeles publication. This same publication has been soliciting our advertisers, as well as other merchants in San Diego, for ads in its Los Angeles directory. Because of this coverage they feel justified in saying that they are the “Official Jewish Community Publication for the Southland.” We feel that the community should be made aware of this false representation so that they in turn can advise the merchants that there is only one Anglo-Jewish Press serving the community of San Diego and that is the Southwestern Jewish Press.
If a Jewish Community Directory is deemed necessary in San Diego, we will be happy to publish it after due consultation with proper authorities.
