Southwestern Jewish Press, February 8, 1957, Pages 1, 6
Abe Abramson, local carpeting executive, has been appointed Pace-Setters Chairman of the United Jewish Fund of San Diego, it was announced by Dr. Walter Ornstein and Victor Schulman, General Campaign Co-Chairmen.
He was joined as a division leader by two outstanding communal workers, Abe Sklar and Isaac Domnitz, who will head the other two divisions of the drive, which will open on April 1st.
Sklar, a past-president of B’nai B’rith, and active in many community programs, will head the Campaigner’s Division, which will include over 750 prospects.
A new division, the Marchers Group, will be chaired by Domnitz, a local Histadrut leader and an old time resident of San Diego. More than 1200 prospects are in this division and it accounts for 75 percent of the number of contributors in the San Diego fund.
The campaign for $295,000, the largest goal in the history of the San Diego Jewish Community, will start officially on April 1, according to the chairmen. The goal has been fixed on the need from San Diego of $120,000 for the United Jewish Appeal Special Emergency Fund, and $175,0000 for the regular 1957 campaign, the bulk of which money will go to the United Jewish Appeal for rescue and rehabilitation.
Plans are underway for a workers institute in March; a Pace-Setters dinner; and a kick-off community meeting, all of which will bring many outstanding individuals from all over the world to San Diego.
The month of February has been designated as Worker’s Recruitment, and Rabbi Morton J. Cohn’s committee will be functioning at full force during this period. Those who wish to work on the 1957 campaign may call BE-2-5172.
