Tharp Blasts Foe on Discrimination
Southwestern Jewish Press, April 5, 1957, Page 15
In a statement issued today, Ross Tharp, candidate for City Council for the 1st District, took exception to his opponents objections to the proposed “FEPC” ordinance. In speeches before the San Diego republican Women’s Club and the Point Loma Democratic Club, Tharp’s opponent has stated that he opposed FEPC in San Diego because “droves of colored people and minority groups would overrun San Diego in order to gain the protection of the ordinance.”
Tharp stated: “It is disturbing that there are still those who openly manifest an attitude of hostility toward others on the basis of race, religion or nationality. It is particularly disturbing when such expressions of discrimination originate from a candidate for public office. I wish to make it clear to the people of San Diego that if I am elected to the City Council I shall endeavor to serve all the people fairly and impartially without regard to the color of their skin or the manner in which they worship.”
Ross Tharp, who is an attorney by profession, won the primary eletion in the 1st District and is now running against his opponent from La Jolla on a city wide basis. The general election is to be held on Tuesday, April 16th.
