UJF Contributions At All Time High: Rescue Fund Contributions On Way To Answer Need
Southwestern Jewish Press, April 19, 1957, Pages 1, 7
As San Diego Jewry was in the midst of its celebration of the Passover holidays Dr. Walter Ornstein and Victor Schulman, General Campaign Co-Chairmen, announced that contributions and pledges to the United Jewish Fund Campaign this week reached the $260,000 mark to exceed, within the first two weeks of the Appeal, the total raised in the entire year of 1956.
In the fastest campaign in the history of the United Jewish Fund a breakdown of pledges to date showed that $120,000 had been given towards the $175,000 requested in the Regular Campaign for normal local, national and overseas needs, with Emergency Rescue contributions at the $86,000 mark in the drive for $120,000 to save 120 lives.
The total sum raised so far shows an overall increase from the same givers of 75% with the Rescue Fund showing a 440% increase over 1956. AT the same time the regular Fund Drive shows an increase of 19% over the last campaign.
However, the Chairmen cautioned all workers in the campaign that the next 30 days would mean the success of the campaign. “The reaching of the goal of $295,000–$120,000 in the Emergency Rescue Fund and $175,000 for the normal needs — depends on every worker doing his job and on ever prospect being covered.” Most encouraging in the campaign was the report that 264 new contributions totaling over $14,000 had been secured to date, the chairman stated.
Completing its third week of official fund raising, the United Jewish Fund Divisions settled down to intensive activity in an attempt to close the campaign by May 15. These were the major new developments in key sectors of the $295,000 drive.
Women’s Division–has exceeded the 1956 total by $5,000 and is planning a third luncheon on April 30, plus an intensive house-to-house solicitation in order to secure the additional $10,150 necessary to reach the gold.
Marcher’s Division — Marchers and Campaigners are pushing all workers in order to get coverage as fast as possible with plans for reassignment of cards immediately after the Passover holidays, according to Isaac Domnitz and Abe Sklar, chairmen.
Areas–Oceanside, already 50% of the way through their campaign; Coronado, solicitation already underway; and the organization this week of the Heartland Area at Mrs. Harry Felson’s home; the organization of South Bay Area, all well underway — all of the county is being widely covered.
Baja California –will begin their campaign immediately after the holidays.
Christian Committee–Plans to intensify its solicitation immediately.
Student Division –is continuing solicitation at the San Diego State College and finding a successful response.
Military Division — Has already turned in almost 50% of its quota and solicitation will begin among officers this week.
