Machinists Union Aids Israel
Southwestern Jewish Press, September 20, 1957, Page 14

San Diego’s largest labor union–the International Association of Machinists–this week pledged its full efforts to raise funds to help build and equip a new Histadrut industrial training center in Israel.

Everett L. Burch, IAM Grand Lodge Representative and chairman of the San Diego LIFT committee, says the drive will be climaxed Oct. 16 at a dinner in the Hotel Statler in Los Angeles. Tickets for the dinner are $50.

IAM locals and other unions in San Diego will be asked to buy tickets, and an appeal will be made to the general public to support the project known as “LIFT” (Labor’s Israel Fund for Training.)

Burch says this effort by West Coast unions of the International Association of Machinists is typical of the spirit of brotherhood that unites union members regardless of their nationality or religious beliefs. “The Lift program will also help strengthen a pioneering nation which has opened its doors to refugees from oppression in a manner similar to that of the United States when it was a new nation,” said Burch.

This year, Israel is preparing to accept 100,000 new refugees from tyranny in Egypt, Poland and Hungary.  From the moment they arrive, Histadrut (Israel’s national labor federation) will be there to assist in the adjustment to a new life.

The big problem facing Histadrut–the one which IAM members can understand from first-hand information — is the training of refugees in the industrial skills so greatly needed in a young nation.
