Community Center Building Completion Fund Campaign for $150,000 Is Announced
Southwestern Jewish Press, November 29, 1957, Page 1
The Jewish Community Center will inaugurate a “Building Completion Fund” Campaign for a minimum of $150,000 in cash toward the new $600,000 Center building now under construction immediately after the United Fund Drive is completed in December, according to Seymour Rabin, Campaign Chairman. He lauded the following community leaders who agreed to serve on the Campaign Cabinet: William B. Schwartz, Bernard Arenson, Sidney Rose, Maury Novak, Morris Douglas, Sidney Silverman, Henry Price, Rodin Horrow, Carl Esenoff, Alfred Solomon, Harry Wax, Max Rabinowitz, Harry Sugarman, Mack Esterson, Abe Sklar, William Starr, Louis Steinman, Edward Breitbard, Norman Gelman, Irving Friedman and Philip Abrams.
In announcing the start of the completion drive, Mr. Rabin reported, “With the monies raised in the 1954 campaign, plus a genuine loan from a local bank, and other money held in trust for building purposes, the Center was enabled to purchase its present site on 54th Street and University Avenue at to begin development of one part of the three-phase building program.” He described the first phase as including the cost of land, construction of the building and swimming pool area.
“Now the time has come,” Rabin continued, “to furnish and equip the building for the opening in April. Because all of the presently available money must be used for the bare building, it is therefore necessary to raise $150,000 in cash to furnish and equip the new Center and to provide for the swimming pool area in time for the opening. This is a challenge,” he stated, “that each of must meet to ensure a living accomplishment for a more complete and enriched life in San Diego for ourselves and our children.”

Southwestern Jewish Press, November 29, 1957, Page 1
As we go to press, preparations for the State of Israel Bond diner Sunday, December 1st at the El Cortez Hotel, have reached their final phase.
Israel Bond Chairman Richard F. Lustig that an attendance of 250 people is expected to hear Drew Pearson. Mr. Lustig also pointed out that the Campaign for Israel Bonds in San Diego will probably be quite close to, if not in excess of, the goal of $100,000.
Commenting on the necessity for continuing Israel Bond sales, Murray D. Goodrich, Honorary Chairman, said “Because of the dangerous situation in the Middle East, Israel must devote a great part of her resources to defense. This means that Israel Bonds are absolutely essential to maintain the country’s economic development. If Israel must take care of both defense and economic development unaided, this critical outpost of democracy, now nearing her tenth anniversary, may be seriously endangered. Dr. Avraham Biran, Consul General of Israel will also speak.

Fund Board Takes Major Actions
Southwestern Jewish Press, November 29, 1957, Page 1
Major action was taken by the directors of the United Jewish Fund at the November Board Meeting held last Tuesday which will affect the program for 1958.
Approval by another special fund campaign in 1958 for the United Jewish Appeal was assured by the directors’ action. It is anticipated that the United Jewish Appeal will ask the American Jewish Communities for at least $70,000,000, Milton Roberts, Fund president, reported.
In another major decision the directors approved the merger of the Fund and the Federation of Jewish Agencies in principal and authorized its submission to the annual meeting on December 15. A joint committee of the two major agencies has been meeting during the last eight months to prepare the by-laws for the merged central organization.
Roberts also reported that Commander Elihu Rickel, UNS (CC) accepted an invitation to become a director of the Fund Board as a Rabbi in the community. Not only was this honor accorded the Assistant 11th Naval District Chaplain for his interest and service to the local Jewish community, but because of his activities, Roberts stated, all Jewish chaplains permanently stationed with the 11th district will be invited to serve.
The Board also agreed that the Histadrut campaign would remain in the United Jewish Fund campaign in 1958 under the same agreement as in past years.
