Jewish Center Reports Large Gifts In Drive
Southwestern Jewish Press, January 24, 1958, Page 1

Seymour Rabin, General Campaign Chairman of the Jewish Community Center “Building Completion Fund Campaign,” reported that over $30,000 had been received in cash to date and $10,000 in pledges to assure the opening of the completed building on April 1, 1958.

Spearheading the campaign was an additional gift of $2,500 by the Rabinowitz Family, making a total of $7,500.  The children’s wading pool will be named in honor of the family.

Harry Sugarman, Large Gifts Chairman, said that there will be little problem in raising the necessary funds to see that the Center is properly equipped and the swimming pool is completed if all families and individuals in San Diego follow the pattern set by the family.

Other gifts in the memorial category were made by Mrs. Herbert Eber for one of the Club Rooms; Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Perlman for the furnishings of the library; Mr. Hyman Wolf, one of San Diego’s pioneers, as an additional contribution for the library in honor of Dr. and Mrs. A.P. Nasatir.

Sugarman reported that plans are being made for an extraordinary dinner to be held the early part of February on behalf of the Building Completion Fund and opened to the entire community.

The Mortar Division, led by Philip Abrams and Herbert Reder, has started to contact those prospects who fall within this division.  “The early returns,” the chairman said, “shows sincere interest and support in behalf of the new Center.”

The Brick Division, under the guidance of Norman Gelman and Al Solomon, are scheduling their activities to reach every family and individual for their participation in the campaign for an additional minimum of $150,000 in cash.

At the same time the announcement was made that the official dedication and opening ceremony of the Jewish Community Center will be held on Sunday, March 30, at 2:00 p.m. at t the Center.  At that time it is expected that governmental officials, civic, religious and communal leaders will be present to participate in the ceremonies opening the new $600,000 Jewish Community Center building, which was stated in the editorial of the San Diego Tribune recently as “the Jewish community’s contribution to San Diego.”

Board of Education Offers Explanation
Southwestern Jewish Press, January 24, 1958, Page 1

In a communication to Albert A. Hutler, Executive Director of the Federation of Jewish Agencies and Secretary of the Community Relations Council, the Jewish community was informed of the decision of the Board of Education to adopt an opening date of September 15, 1958 for the school calendar. They advised that in considering the calendar the Board was aware that September 15 “is one of the Holy Days for those of the Jewish Faith.”

The Board was also aware that Jewish children would be attending religious ceremonies and stated “approval for this type of absence due to special religious observance has been written into the rules and regulations of the school district.”

The letter points out that the opening day of school is always a minimum day for pupils, and absentees on that day would miss only one half day of school. There is no registration problem for children who are already attending San Diego schools, because they are automatically enrolled for the subsequent school year and, therefore, have no registration problems.

Other pupils who are currently in Junior and Senior High School will be programmed for their full courses during the Spring semester.

“Enrollment of kindergarten pupils and pupils new to the district,” the Board informed the Federation and Council “can be accomplished during the week previous to the start of school when the administrative officers are on duty.”

Community Leaders Pledge More Aid To Overseas In 1958
Southwestern Jewish Press, January 24, 1958, Page 1

Two hundred and twenty Jewish community leaders from 13 communities in the Western States Region of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, at its 22nd annual regional assembly this past weekend noted the growing interdependence of overseas, national and local needs. This realization made possible the fullest mobilization of all the elements in the communities to meet the increased responsibilities both at home and overseas, the delegates declared in a special resolution on fund raising.

Representing San Diego were Dr. A.P. Nasatir, Dr. Walter Ornstein, William Colt, Eli H. Levenson, Albert Hutler and Henrietta Rubenstein.

The Jewish leaders, meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, January 10-12, rededicated themselves to redoubled efforts in the 1958 campaigns, determined to seek out “the most effective techniques applicable to each community to insure a response commensurate with the magnitude of the task.”

Dr. George Piness, of Los Angeles, was elected president of the region. Other officers elected were: Vice Presidents, Jacob Fruchthendler, Tucson; Jack W. Olds, Portland, Ore.; and Irving Hill, Los Angeles.  Edward Ranston, San Francisco, was chosen treasurer.

The delegates note Israel’s “remarkable accomplishment” in taking in over 900,000 refugees in the past ten years and pledged intensified efforts to enable Israel to continue to offer a haven of refuge.

Other resolutions dealt with revision of the U.S. immigration laws; year-round programs to recruit and train young men and women for communal leadership; comprehensive recruitment programs, involving all Jewish agencies to overcome a shortage of professional personnel; and increased government support of health and welfare services, locally, state-wide and nationally.

Southwestern Jewish Press, January 24, 1958, Page 1

The Israel Histadrut Campaign will again be a part of the United Jewish Fund, Milton Robert, Fund president, and Ruben Umansky, Histadrut president jointly announced.

This was the first step in the planning process for the 1958 campaign of the United Jewish Fund and the Rescue Fund of the United Jewish Appeal.

“In joining together in the 1958 campaign of the United Jewish Fund,” Roberts and Umansky said, “we do so in the best interests of Israel and Jews throughout the world as well as for continued harmony in our own community.”

Announcement of campaign leadership will be made in the near future, Mr. Roberts said.

At the same time the directors of the Fund agreed to accept the same goal for the United Jewish Appeal Rescue Fund as was raised in the 1957 campaign to assist in the immigration of another 80,000 Jews.  It is expected that 70,000 will go to Israel and 10,000 to other lands in 1958.

To commemorate the inauguration of the shipping company, Ghana this week announced the issuance of a set of stamps in the following colors and denominations: green, 2 ½ pence; blue, 1 shilling, threepence; and lavender, 5 shillings.  Shown above is the 50shilling stamp, which depicts a modern cargo vessel, together with a flying fish within a shield topped by a black star.
