Yo-Ma-Co Club

The Yo-Ma-Co Club celebrated their 22nd year at the installation held at the Lafayette Hotel, Sunday, February 16th.

Lenny Pearl took over the reins of presidency. Assisting Mr. Pearl in his new term will be Vice President Tully Kitaen; Recording Secretary, Esther Brisker; Corresponding Secretary, Ann Benjamin; Treasurer, Hank Levine; Membership Secretary. Mona Sharpe; Sgt-at-Arms, Hy Kitaen.

The evening at the Lafayette Hotel was highlighted by a dinner and dance, at which time four new member couples were installed; Allen and Edythe Hoffing; Max and Muriel Strauss; Bernie and Anne Godes, Israel and Ethel Shavinsky.

The Club had the honor of introducing to San Diego a new dance called “Alternate,”  the words and music for which were supplied by Dave Cohen.

Milt Kossy was Master of Ceremonies and Edie Gelman and Alice Solomon, co-chairmen for the evening.

Party To Aid Israel Set By Birdie Stodel

The annual Aid to Israel Card Party given by the S.D. Birdie Stodel B’nai B’rith Women will be this Sunday, February 23rd, at the Beth Jacob Center, 7:30 p.m.

This year’s party has a special appeal.  It will afford an opportunity to wish a “bon voyage” to Goldie and Frank Winicki who will soon leave for Israel.

Goldie Schusterman, Marcia Winicki, Marion Resnick and Goldie Winicki all co-chairmen, promise fine refreshments and a pleasant evening for all.

The chapter is planting a tree in the B’nai B’rith Forest in Israel for the safe return of Mr. and Mrs. F. Winicki. Anyone else interested may also plant a tree in our Winicki orchard, either at the Card Party, or by calling Sally Kaiser, AT-5-5224, Ruth Aronoff, CY-6-3225.

Queen Esther To Be Chosen At Pioneer Women Purim Ball

Mrs. Harry Weitzman and Mrs. Seymour Gates, presidents of the Negba and Shoshana groups of Pioneer Women, announce final arrangements for the annual Purim Ball. The Ball, a yearly tradition, will take place at the House of Hospitality, Balboa Park, on Saturday, March 1, at 8 p.m.  Dancing to the music of Ear Fisher’s Orchestra and a Snack Bar will be available.  The tables will be decorated in a Purim Theme.

Highlight of each year’s Ball is the crowning of Queen Esther.  She will be chosen, this year, from among the following candidates: Marilyn Aved, Barbara Belovin, Nella Feldman, Jackie Haffner, June Persky, Sonia Weitzman and Muriel Winner.  Last year’s Queen, Carolyn Fine, will crown the new Queen, who will be chosen by popular acclaim, using an applause meter and three judges led by Morrie Douglas, master of ceremonies for the evening.  The Queen will be given a prize of a wardrobe contributed by San Diego merchants All the other girls will be declared “Ladies in Waiting” and receive consolation prizes.

A tea for the contestants and committee chairmen will precede the Ball where the girls will receive their final instructions.  The contest is still open to any girl 16 to 22 years of age, who applies by Thursday, February 25.

In charge of all arrangement are Mrs. Rose Brooker, chairman, and Mrs. Leo Ross, co-chairman. Heading the committees are: Refreshments, Mrs. Jennie Bloomfield and Mrs. Rose Leaf; Publicity, Mrs George Alpert and Mrs. Jack Pupkin; Prizes, Mrs. Doris Brisker and Mrs. Goldie Kitean; Tickets, Mrs. Phillip Abrams and Mrs. Oscar Rothstein; Decorations, MRs. Esther Menger and Mrs. Hy Parrell.

As in the past, all profits go to the support of the Moetzet Hapoalot (sister organization of  the Pioneer Women, in Israel) which in 1957 served 20,000 women, 2,50 young people and 20,000 children.

Tickets for the Ball are available from all members of Pioneer Women or at the door. As in the past, all servicemen will be admitted at half price, and all guests are eligible for one of the door prizes.

Young Leaders To Hear Speakers

Four new members have been accepted for the Community Service Organization since membership was opened last month, Morris Zemlick, psychologist; Jordan Lansky, cartoonist; Sam Grossman, television and radio announcer, and Marvin Zigman, real estate, according to Robert Shapiro, President.

The young leadership group, Shapiro said, now has a membership of forty professional and business men who are being trained for communal leadership as part of a planned program instituted almost four years ago by the Federation of Jewish Agencies and the United Jewish Fund.

Advisors are Carl M. Esenoff, past president of the Federation; Eli H. Levenson, past president of the  United Jewish Fund, and at present National Vice President of the Council of Federations and Welfare Funds, and Albert A. Hutler, Executive Director of the United Jewish Fund and Federation.

The program schedule was announced by Mrs. Shapiro as follows: Tuesday, March 11th, Elmer Wohl, assistant to the President of Convair; Tuesday, April 8th, Dr. S. Bardin, Director of the Brandeis Youth Foundation; Tuesday, May 14th, Louis Ziskind, Executive Director of the Jewish Committee for Personal Service and Gateways.

Jewish War Vets Elect Grossman Commander

Robert “Bob” Grossman, colorful World War II veteran, was elected Post Commander for 1958-59 by San Diego Post 185, Jewish War Vets, at its annual election meeting on February 11.  Grossman, who was raised in the shadow of Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, served as an aerial gunner with the 9th Night Fighter Squadron, 5th Air Force in the Western Pacific, Philippine and New Guinea campaigns.  He is a partner with his father, Harry, and brother, Mel, in the Mel-Ro Textile Co., wholesale cleaner and dyer supplies.

Also elected to serve with Grossman were: Abe Sandler, Senior Vice Commander; Le Roy Seckler, Judge Advocate; Dave Brooks, Quartermaster; Willie Mintz, Post Surgeon; Dr. Harmon L. Easton, Trustee.  Louis Buddy Samuels will serve as Adjutant, Ben J. Safer as Officer of the Day, and Adolph Brodman as Chaplain.

The newly elected officers will be installed at the annual Installation Dinner Dance on Saturday, March 22 at 8:0-0 p.m. in the Terrace Room of the Lafayette Hotel.  The popular Earl Fisher and his band will be featured.  Reservations for the affair are now being accepted by Harry Apelman and JU-3-5071, or Buddy Samuels at HO-9-8268.  Cost is $3.25, tax and tip included.

San Diego Chapter AZA, sponsored by Weinberger Lodge of B’nai B’rith, now has 30 members, Sidney Winicki, membership committee chairman, announced.

The next AZA meeting will be Sunday, February 23, at 1:00 in the Community Center, Central and University.

AZA is a fraternity for Jewish boys from 14-17.  It has a five fold and full program of athletics, culture, community service, religion and socials.  Anyone interested is invited to attend the meeting.

Bay City Women Plan Dinner

Bay City B’nai B’rith Women are planning an evening of fun on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the East San Diego Women’s Club, 4037 39th St.  A delicious dinner, featuring spaghetti and meat balls will be served.

Mrs. Eugene Sacks, President, invites members, friends and the public to participate in the event.  Proceeds will be used to support the many philanthropies in which B’nai B’rith participates.

Hostesses for the evening are Mmes. Louis Entin, Milton Lincoff, Andrew Segal, David Epstein, Sam Dimenstein, Sidney Cornell, Arthur Friedman, Marc Estrin, Jack Meyers and Dave Tobias.

Coffee Chat To Hear Dr. Propper

Culture and entertainment, intellect and charm, will be presented to San Diegans at the next Mr. and Mrs. Coffee Chat of the National Council of Jewish Women, according to Chairman Mrs. Simon Reznikoff.  “Yes You Do Like Opera” is the subject Dr. Jan Popper will feature on Thursday, March 20, at 8 p.m., in the Terrace Room of the Lafayette Hotel.

With extensive training both in Europe and the United States, Dr. Popper has taught for many years at University of California at Los Angeles.  In 1955 and 1956, he wrote and supervised the production of the TV show, “Spotlight on Opera.”

Accepting no fee for his appearance before the Council group, Dr. Popper has requested that the proceeds from the meeting be donated to a scholarship fund for worthy music students. Refreshments will be served for $1.00 per person.  Reservations may be made with Mrs. Lester Kraus, BR-7-3206.

Sr. Citizens To Hear Cantor Dubner February 25th

Cantor Israel Dubner of Beth Jacob Synagogue will be featured at the next Senior Adult meeting sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women, Tuesday, February 25, 1 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center. Honoring Jewish Music Month, Cantor Dubner will present a program of Israeli songs. A former resident of the State of Israel, he will relate the background of each song he sings.

Mrs. Herbert Malley, Senior Adult Chairman, announces that all guests having birthdays in February will be honored.  Refreshments will be served. There is no admission charge and no reservations are necessary.

Mrs. Lester Tokars is in charge of refreshments and Mrs. Fritz Lavender, telephoning.

Brandeis Camp Invites Registration

Registration for the 1958 season at Brandeis Institute, Santa Suzanna, California, for college students between the age of 18 and 25 was recently opened according to an announcement received by members of the United Jewish Fund’s Brandeis Scholarship Committee.

Dr. A.P. Nasatir, Max Rabinowitz and Abe Abramson constitute the local Brandeis Committee. They urge interested college students to immediately contact Albert A. Hutler, Committee Secretary, for information. Buy agreement with the Brandeis Youth Foundation all applicants for scholarships to the camp season must be made immediately so that the committee can make every effort to secure a scholarship for the applicant.

Purim Carnival Set at Heartland

The Heartland Jewish Community Organization will hold a Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 2, at 1757 Garrison Way, El Cajon, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The Carnival will feature pony rides and games for children and adults.  A luncheon will be served.  All are invited to attend this fund raising affair for the Sunday School.

At 8:00 p.m., on the same night of March 2, a Purim Square Dance will be held at Rotary Hall, Hyland and Douglas Ave., El Cajon.  The caller will be Kip Muse and those who do not know how to square dance will receive instructions. Refreshment s will be served.  The admission is $1 per couple.
