SAN DIEGO — The U-T’s “Night and Day” section posed to restaurateur Charles Kaufman of Bread & Cie Café the question of what restaurant, other than his own of course, is his favorite.  He picked Counterpoint at 830 25th St., complimenting its food and ambience, but most of all its staff, whom he described as uniformly gracious.  He even suggested that restaurant’s owner, Cam Fomby, start a school for training staff – they’re that good.

Police are hoping statistics will help them determine whether officers out on the beat are stopping people based on their race, rather than for any just cause.  Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told U-T reporter David Garrick that “The San Diego Police Department is absolutely committed to the fair treatment of all members of our community.  Building and sustaining trust is essential to furthering our department’s mission and vision.  WE will not tolerate racial profiling.”  Statistics for the first three months of 2014 compared ethnic groups by their percentage in the city’s driving population compared to their percentage in a tally of traffic stops.  Whites are 47.6 percent of the driving population (and 41.8 percent of the traffic stops.) Other groups Asians 20 (15.6); Hispanics 26.6 (30.3), Blacks 5.8 (12.3).
