SAN DIEGO (Press Release)– On April 13, 2015 various theaters, cultural organizations and memorial institutions across the country will unite to honor victims of the Holocaust by joining in Remembrance Readings for Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah).
This inaugural event is led by theaters from San Diego, including the La Jolla Playhouse, The Old Globe, North Coast Repertory Theatre, San Diego Repertory Theatre and Lamb’s Players Theatre
These organizations and others around the nation will organize staged readings with a play of their choosing. Each reading will be followed by a discussion with audience members about the lessons of the Holocaust and the relevance of those lessons in today’s world.
All plays will be selected from the newly launched Holocaust Theater Catalog (HTC), researched and created by the National Jewish Theater Foundation (NJTF) and housed online at the University of Miami Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies. The existence and utilization of the NJTF/HTC has forever changed the landscape of Holocaust research, education and awareness with listings of nearly 600 play entries written on the subject since 1933 to the present day. Making this resource tool the most extensive, easily accessible catalog of Holocaust related titles and relevant other information ever created.
Arnold Mittelman, NJTF Founding President and Project Director of its Holocaust Theater International Initiative who conceived this idea stated, “I sincerely hope that Remembrance Readings engenders participation, education, identification and empathy that only live theater exemplifies and delivers in a profound way. I am so grateful to the leadership of all theaters and a growing list of organizations in San Diego, Chicago, Atlanta, South Florida, New York City and elsewhere for committing their talent and outreach efforts. Our goal is to impact society with this program which is far greater than any one institution. I hope that the use of theater in this manner and in education grows in years to come”.
