SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — Congregation Beth Israel, San Diego’s oldest and largest Jewish congregation, will host its annual Spring Gala that includes an art auction and performance by entertainer and comedian Paul Reiser. The event takes place Sunday, May 17, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., at Congregation Beth Israel.
The Spring Gala begins with a silent auction, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and a dinner sampling. Next up is a live auction and performance by Reiser. The comedian is known for his entertaining roles and writing, and for co-creating and starring in the NBC sitcom, Mad About You. He has also written several best-selling books including Couplehood and Babyhood.
“From our committee members to sponsors, and our youth members who donated their time and talent for the auction items, the Spring Gala is a celebration for the entire Beth Israel community,” said Rabbi Michael Berk, senior rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel. “It is a wonderful celebration of what Beth Israel is all about—the community of individuals and families who make this congregation a part of their lives. It will be a beautiful night.”
The highlight of the Spring Gala is a selection of hand-painted, one-of-a-kind chairs that will be sold as part of the silent auction. The chairs were painted by Beth Israel youth and established and emerging local artists, including: Rachel Berkowitz, Terri Bignell, Cathy Carey, Ann Chaitin, Karen DePodesta, Kelly Greene, Paul Kaufman, Hollis Litrownik, Lesley Mills, Pam Valfer, and Allen R. Brewer.
“The collection of chairs is stunning, and each chair shows off the individual artist’s talent and unique perspective,” said Meg Mandel, president of Congregation Beth Israel. “Thanks to the generosity of so many, we have an incredible array of auction items.”
A dessert reception concludes the evening. Proceeds from the Beth Israel Spring Gala will support the congregation’s mission to open doors to all who seek a connection to Judaism.
