SAN DIEGO — Sgt. Alfred Menaker, a World War II veteran, died May 16, 2015 at the age of 95. Born in Philadelphia, PA he moved to San Diego in 1974 with his, Thelma, a former commander of the Jewish Auxiliary Post 185 . Alfred and Thelma were married for 68 years before her passing in 2012. After his wife’s passing, Alfred moved to Kennewick, Washington, to live with their oldest son and daughter in-law.

Menaker worked in the men’s clothing business until retirement. As a soldier in WWII he proudly served as a tank commander in Italy, Germany and Austria and was involved in supporting the infantry in liberating many cities and concentration camps. . He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans and volunteered for the House of Israel.

He enjoyed traveling, the theater and opera and did volunteer ushering for many years.

Menaker is survived by three children:  Brett (Carol), Miriam (Marc), and Donald (Brenda), eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral and internment were at Miramar National Cemetery  in San Diego on May 27, 2015.
