SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — Beth Israel’s Men’s Club will host outgoing State Senator Marty Block (D-San Diego) at its Nov. 16 dinner forum, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Block will provide a legislative summary of his time in office.
The state senator earned his BA in political science and education at Indiana University as well as a law degree from DePaul University. He began his career as a history teacher in Illinois before coming to San Diego. He retired after 26 years as a professor, dean and director at San Diego State University where he founded the National Higher Education Law and Policy Institute. He is a five-time recipient of outstanding faculty awards at San Diego State University and was presented with the University Distinguished Service Award upon retirement by SDSU President Stephen Weber.
He has been President of both the San Diego County Board of Education and the San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees. He has frequently served as Judge Pro Tem of the San Diego Superior Court. His community involvement includes time as commissioner of the San Diego County Commission on Children, Youth and Families. He also founded the San Diego Latino/Jewish Coalition and served as president of the American Jewish Committee, San Diego Chapter.
This program is open to the entire San Diego community, both men and women. Temple or Men’s Club membership is not a requirement to attend. This program also doubles as our annual Jewish Family Service “Embrace a Family” program” that provides holiday gifts to families in need.
A buffet dinner and the speaker program are free for those who bring new unwrapped toys and / or gifts, grocery scrip or gift certificates (per attendee) valued at $15.00 or higher. For those who choose not to bring gifts, all funds collected ($15 with an RSVP, $18.00 without an RSVP) for the event will be donated to Jewish Family Service.
