Survivor Ruth Hohberg addresses CBI Men July 18

SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — Beth Israel’s Men’s Club has scheduled Ruth Hohberg as guest speaker at the July 18 Dinner Forum beginning at 6:30 p.m. Her presentation will cover Getting Here, an Odyssey through WWII recounting some of the memories of her experiences as a child during the war. This program is open to all. Membership at Beth Israel or the Men’s Club is not a requirement to attend.

Hohberg was born in Krakow, Poland, and lived in the city of Bielsko, (Bielitz) until she and her mother left to stay ahead of Hitler. She and her family were declared political prisoners by the Soviets and transported to Siberia in 1940. When the war ended, they were repatriated to Poland where they were not welcome. Ruth will share her experiences regarding her journey before coming to the United States as a twelve-year-old.

Ruth Weiss Hohberg

Educated in New York City, she graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art, earned a degree in Art Education, followed by one in Social Work. She began to write her autobiography and other works when she moved to San Diego in 2000. Ruth is the author of Getting Here: An Odyssey Through World War II;  A Girl from Bielsko: Ruth’s Story;  Vignettes from Life, Going Places, Moments and Memories, and a translation from German written by her uncle titled Witness and Survivor.

Her other loves, painting and photography have won prizes in exhibitions throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, and then as a member of the North County Society for fine arts and Rancho Bernardo Art Association. She works in watercolor, acrylic, oil-pastel, pen and ink, colored pencil, and photography.  She is a former member of the Penwomen of America and the Press Club, Rancho Bernardo Chapter.​
