LA JOLLA, California — The opening program of the eleventh season of Jewish Poets—Jewish Voices will showcase student poets from the San Diego Jewish community.  On Tuesday evening, October 16, 7:00 p.m. in the Astor Judaica Library, fourteen young people will read their original poems. English teacher, Elaine Lepow, will be accompanying her 10th grade Torah High School student poet, Shayna Winnick.

San Diego Jewish Academy High School Humanities Department Chair, Sara Hansen, will come with four student poets:
9th graders, Alexandra Amiel, Rena Novom, Liam Rosenberg, and 10th grader, Maya Silberstein.

San Diego Jewish Academy’s Middle School Creative Writing Teacher, Stacey Goldblatt, will be bringing students Natalia Alchalel, Dalia Gerson, Jenna Kreedman, Rebecca Mannor and Maital Meltzer.

Temple Solel’s Religious School Director, Ellen Fox, will attend with two Bat Mitzvah students, Lauren Mathios and Sammy Sisitsky. 11th grader, Shayna Meltzer, a madricha at Congregation Ohr Shalom Religious School will read her poetry, as will Shor Masori, a 12th grader who attends the Community Jewish High School.

Maital and Shayna Meltzer are the daughters of Rabbi Scott Meltzer, Rabbi of Congregation Ohr Shalom, and Jennifer Meltzer, Program Coordinator for the Lawrence Family JCC’s Nierman Pre-School. Their paternal grandmother, Karen Rund, taught for many years at the San Diego Jewish Academy. Shor Masori is the grandson of San Diego Jewish World’s Editor, Don Harrison.
This evening was scheduled to coincide with the Parsha Posters Exhibit in the Gotthelf Gallery of the JCC. Many
of the poems are inspired by the stories and teachings of the Torah. The Parsha Posters Exhibit will be open before and after the poetry program.

Following the hour of featured poets, there will be a half hour of open microphone when both adults and students are welcome to read one of their works. The evening will conclude with light refreshments.

This program is free, although donations are gratefully accepted. Please RSVP to Melanie: melanier@lfjcc.org
