SAN DIEGO — After much back and forth as to where we should meet, a book publishing client and I ended up at the Brew Coffee Spot. This was my first time there, and I was utterly charmed.
The space is pretty big, and they could probably put a lot more tables in it, but instead they have a lot of open space. Some of the larger tables are meant for people to sit together and co-use the table. They have outlets along the back wall to charge your laptop, and free wifi. It’s a great spot to sit and do some work while you people watch. The service style is fast casual, that is you walk up to the counter, order your food, and then wait, until you can take it back to your table. The menu is pretty standard I think, but they do have a kitchen on site and make some of the items fresh upon ordering. And, the part that I’m always most concerned with, they are happy to make substitutions in order to accommodate dietary restrictions (in my case subbing out bacon for avocado).
I ordered an especially complicated latte, as I always do at coffee shops. My goal is to have maximum caffeine and minimal coffee flavor, so I’ve worked it out to a scientific mix of chemicals. I’m happy to report that they were able to not only accommodate my order, but also to get it right, so I didn’t have to go back for any revisions.
I also ordered a breakfast sandwich, which was a ciabatta roll with an egg cooked over hard, that avocado I substituted, and cheese. It was pretty good, but would have benefited from a pesto spread or something like that- it lacked a savory component to give it that extra zing.
Overall though, it seemed like a fine place to come and work, or to meet someone and hang out. I’m pretty sure that I’ll be there again as I’m always looking for places to work that are out of my house. Since high school I’ve found that the white noise of the hustle and bustle of a coffee shop helps me focus and get my work done. The challenge in recent years has been that so many coffee shops are moving to uncomfortable seating to get people in and out, instead of making it comfortable for them to come and stay. I get the logic, higher turnover can mean more profits, but for someone like me, it also might mean losing a customer. I’m very happy to report that that is not the case at Brew Coffee Spot, and the place is made to be very welcoming to visitors who want to come and stay for a while.
All-in-all I give the Brew Coffee Spot an 8 out of 10. It was exactly what I look for in a coffee shop, but there wasn’t anything that was above and beyond the normal or that I would dream about.
