HENDERSON, Nevada — I was in the Las Vegas area for a conference and met an old friend for dinner. She took me to the Black Mountain Grill which is part sports bar and part restaurant/ lounge. It’s a very large restaurant with multiple rooms and is open 24 hours a day, in keeping with Vegas being an all-day, all-night type city.

The decor is hunting lodge rustic, but being Nevada, there were video slot machines at the bar. Giant tv screens were on the walls. We were sitting in the bar area and the TVs were on full blast- it was very loud. This way off the Strip local hangout is frequented by residents of the neighboring retirement communities.

I asked the waiter what he recommended and he suggested the Cowboy Steak- a 22oz T-bone steak served with onion rings and bbq sauce. I chose asparagus for the side. I have to say the steak was incredible! It was one of the best t-bones I’ve had, perfectly cooked to a pink medium and tender.

My friend had the Mountain Salad which included candied walnuts, cucumber, roma tomato, with Parmesan cheese and balsalmic dressing. I didn’t try it, but it looked good, and since she has been there before and ordered it again, I’m going to assume it was to her liking.

The waiter was a little overzealous. He was very attentive, but perhaps a little too much so. He came back to check on us a few times too often. On the other hand, I would prefer over eager service to bad service, so while I noticed it, it wasn’t that big a deal.

All in all, I give them an 8.75. If you’re in Henderson, it’s worth a try.
