How Much Is That Puppy in the Window?
(Dedicated to Steven L. Jacobs)

By Elona Baron as told to Laurie Baron

SAN DIEGO−My owner writes parodies of songs and suggested I try my paw at it.  I heard this old Patti Paige record and decided to update it.

How much is that puppy in the window?
The one who is sold at a store.
Unlike the doggies at the shelters,
You know it will cost you much more.

Most of the puppies who have papers,
Are sold for prices too steep.
If the doggies at shelters aren’t adopted,
They are destined to be put to sleep.

Pedigree puppies always find homes,
Not so mongrels, adults, or the sick,
All will become loyal companions
Winning hearts with a wag and a lick.

When looking to get a new dog
As a first pet or after an old one has died.
Rescue one from a pound or a shelter.
You’ll find that its love will abide.
