Some tips for keeping cavities at bay
SAN DIEGO — Dr. Jeremy Factor, a periodontist, worries that the months between Halloween and secular New Year’s Day expose many teeth, especially those of children, to cavity-producing sweets in the form of sodas, candies, and cakes. Assuming many people will indulge in sweets, he offers a six-point plan “to keep cavities at bay.”
*Sip beverages through a paper or stainless steel straw to help minimize acid contact with your teeth.
*Brush and floss after every meal, especially after enjoying rich desserts.
*Bump up your water intake to help rebalance your mouth’s PH and minimize oral bacteria growth.
*Limit snacking to allow your saliva to neutralize acid and work on restoring enamel.
*Chew sugar-free gum to satisfy your sweet tooth and increase saliva production.
*Use a fluoride rinse after you brush at night to give your teeth an added layer of protection.
I’d add a seventh suggestion: Try to persuade your children to follow these rules.
