SAN DIEGO — Board members of the Jewish Federation of San Diego County have voted unanimously to contribute $100,000 to help the Lawrence Family JCC to host the August 2-7, 2020 JCC Maccabi Games and Art Fest which are expected to bring to San Diego 2,000 athletes from all over the world.

Among those athletes will be three delegations that the Jewish Federation will sponsor.  One will come from the Sha’ar Hanegev Municipality, which is Federation’s partnership region in Israel, lying adjacent to the Gaza border.  The others are from St. Petersburg, Russia, and from Sofia, Bulgaria.

Michael Jeser, the president and chief executive officer of the Jewish Federation, outlined the reasons for the Federation role in a “My Two Shekels” column published on the Federation website.

“Federation is committed to deepening our partnership with Sha’ar HaNegev and showcasing that partnership as part of the games,” Jeser wrote.

Additionally, Federation is committed to deepening relationships with specific Jewish communities in other parts of the world as one of its core missions.

Jeser said the games will help to create a “sense of Jewish peoplehood in San Diego.”

In addition to the $100,000 grant, Federation will also contribute in-kind donations of staff and marketing support, Jeser said.
