SAN DIEGO — As the Nov. 3 election nears, political activity is increasing in frequency and intensity.   Following are some local political developments:

Congresswoman Susan Davis, D-San Diego, reports: “With bipartisan support, the House passed the National Museum of the American Latino Act. The bill establishes the National Museum of the American Latino in the Smithsonian Institution to illuminate Latino contributions to the story of the United States. I was proud to support this legislation because the Latino story is an American story.”

*In the 53rd Congressional District, Sara Jacobs has been endorsed by a Republican and a Democratic primary opponent, respectively Morgan Murtaugh and Josie Caballero.   Jacobs, a Democrat, is running against San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez for the seat from which Congresswoman Susan Davis is retiring.

*San Francisco State Univeristy Professor Marc Dollinger will deliver a three-part lecture series sponsored by Tifereth Israel Synagogue, Temple Emanu-El and Congregation Dor Hadash, on the following dates and subjects: Wednesday, Aug. 5, 7 .m., “Jews and the Civil Rights Movement, 1950s;” Tuesday, Aug. 11, 7 p.m., “Jews and the Black Power Movement, 1960s and 1970s;” and Tuesday, Aug. 18, 7 p.m., “Jews and Racism, 1619, 1654, 2020.”

*Former U.S. President Barack Obama has endorsed two San Diegans among 54 Democrats he favors nationwide in the November elections.  They are  U.S. Rep. Mike Levin in the 49th Congressional District and Ammar Campa-Najjar in the 50th Congressional District.  Obama wrote on Twitter: “I’m proud to endorse this diverse and hopeful collection of thoughtful, empathetic, and highly qualified Democrats. If you’re in one of their districts or states, make sure you vote for them this fall. And if you can, vote early—by mail or in person.”  Both Levin and Campa-Najjar face Republican opponents.  The former President made no recommendation in the hotly contested 53rd Congressional District in which Sara Jacobs opposes fellow Democrat Georgette Gomez.

*Joe Leventhal was endorsed in the 5th District San Diego City Council race by a former holder of that seat, former San Diego City Councilwoman Barbara Warden.  She commented:  “District 5 needs a leader who is not afraid of bold solutions to the challenges our communities face, and I believe Joe is the right person for the job,” said Warden. “He and his family have been dedicated to our community and will prioritize fiscal responsibility and job creation to get our economy back on track.”

*Assemblyman Todd Gloria (D-San Diego), a candidate for mayor of San Diego, messaged: “Last week a reporter asked me for proof that my parents were a maid and a gardener. It angered my entire family, but especially my mother, who cleaned an apartment the day after my brother was born because our family needed the money. I describe myself as the son of a maid and a gardener because it is foundational in my life. My family never had a lot of money. We were working class but that never stopped my parents from giving me advice—lots and lots of advice! Leave a place better than you found it. Be honest. Take care of others. Study hard and work hard. Appreciate your family and what they’ve given you. My Dad went on to have a successful career and still works at General Atomics. Mom and Dad were eventually able to buy a home and put both my brother and me through college.
I’ve told the story of my upbringing many times. I worry that we are letting the American Dream of a comfortable home and financial security slip away in San Diego. My parents would be the exception today, not the norm. That’s not what I want for San Diego. We have to put a roof over everyone’s head at a price they can afford. And unlike what my opponent tells you, we don’t have to ruin our neighborhoods to do it.”

*Terra Lawson-Remer will be feted during an online fundraiser from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday,  Aug. 15, hosted by Masada Disenhouse and Cody Petterson.  Running in the 3rd District of the County Board of Supervisors, Lawson-Remer seeks to unseat Kristin Gaspar.  Speakers at the event will include Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, who wants a Democratic majority on the technically non-partisan board, and Bobby Wallace, representing the Barona Band of Mssion Indians.
