WINCHESTER, California – Why Jews Do That, authored by Rabbi Avram Mlotek, co-founder and the Rabbi of Base Manhattan, a group described as an “organization aiming to be a pluralistic Jewish salon for the post-college set,” is occasionally irreverent, often amusing, and always succinct and to the point with its answers.

Mlotek divides Why Jews Do That into five sections: Time, Props, Purpose, Grub, and God. Each section holds five to seven questions, many arising from daily observation – Why do Jews light candles, wear “Pope-like” hats, and use prayer shawls? What does it mean to keep Kosher? Why Jews Do That also addresses more contemplative questions, such as “Who, What, Where, When, How, and Why God?” and “What if I don’t believe any of this crap?”

It’s easy to see that Mlotek, a millennial rabbi serving millennials, addresses his responses to that group, but other age groups might benefit as well. Beneath the frivolity of language lies useful information for those declaring on the one hand, “I am Jewish”, and on the other knowing little of its foundation in thought, practice, and ritual.

Mlotek, neither evaluating nor advocating for any branch of Judaism, is not afraid to tackle controversial topics, such as Jews for Jesus, who is a Jew, and conversion. Nearly every page contains an interesting aside, called “Fun Facts!” and “Jews Say Wha?” The many color graphics and illustrations by Faby Rodriguez and Jenny Young are beautiful, entertaining, germane and thoughtful, contributing greatly to the book.

Of his book, Mlotek says Why Jews Do That is an easy-to-read and funny book that you won’t be afraid to have found in the bathroom when your grandmother comes to visit. I agree, and add, she just might learn something, too.
