ADL: Facebook’s 2-year ban on Trump ‘doesn’t go far enough’

NEW YORK (Press Release) — On Friday, Facebook announced that former President Donald Trump would remain banned on the social network until at least January 7, 2023, two years after he was initially blocked in the aftermath of the Capitol riot. Anti-Defamation League (ADL) CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt released the following statement in reaction to Facebook’s decision:

Former President Donald Trump points angrily at members of the news media, whom he characterized as “slime.”

“While banning former President Trump is a step in the right direction, this simply doesn’t go far enough. President Trump used Facebook for years to spread hate and disinformation, culminating in inciting a violent insurrection to contest the results of a fair and democratic election. This behavior, which indisputably violated Facebook’s standards, merits much more than a two-year suspension. We and the Stop Hate for Profit coalition will push for this to be a permanent ban as we also expect them to take stronger action to combat the onslaught of antisemitic and racist content as well as all forms of hate on the platform.”

Separately, on Wednesday, the ADL sent a letter to the Facebook Oversight Board which addressed how the social media giant has “failed to take sufficient action against posts, groups and users that promote antisemitism, in clear contravention of the company’s community standards.” The full letter can be read here: https://www.adl.org/media/16436/download
