SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — Barrett Holman Leak is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in central San Diego as a diverse, working-class candidate.
“We need and deserve better representation than we see in Congress. We need and deserve representatives who will not accept money from foreign lobbyists, profit in office from stocks in Big Pharma and Big Tech, ignore segments of our diverse district and skip town or shine a spotlight on themselves while constituent voters are suffering. We need and deserve representatives who do not believe that any political means justifies the end of getting a seat in Congress,” said Holman Leak, a multiethnic Black Jewish woman who is challenging the Jewish incumbent congresswoman, U.S. Rep. Sara Jacobs.
Holman Leak, a member of Reform synagogue Temple Emanu-El in the Del Cerro neighborhood of San Diego, is seeking to bring tikkun olam (the Jewish value of repairing the world) to the CA-51 congressional district. She resides in the district’s central Mission Valley neighborhood, is a former professional journalist and federal government employee, a global humanitarian aid worker, small businesswoman, co-founder and director of a non-profit organization working with foreign diplomats, and author of the Lori Leak children’s book series. The third and latest book in the series is Lori Leak Travels to San Diego.
“We can and must improve. Such brokenness and chaos have come to our daily lives in San Diego – homelessness and economic disparity that is crushing families, youth and young adults, military families, multicultural communities and senior citizens. It is time for justice and change in San Diego and not only lip service to that; I am a highly qualified, high educated and experienced working-class candidate with resilience, compassion and integrity,” said Holman Leak.
Holman Leak is a lifelong Democrat who has a vision for the district and the country which includes but is not limited to affordable housing and effective homelessness solutions, fighting for better economic parity for military families, seeking funding for ethnic organizations that have not been given funding but are asked to or forced to scramble to provide community resources, small business owner support, voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, Medicare for all, pro-choice, and more.
“Because I have lived and worked as a Democrat abroad in Denmark, I know what it is like to live in a society where all economic classes have the same basic opportunities and benefits – women’s rights, healthcare, housing, equal pay, LGBTQ+ rights, voting rights, high environmental standards and more,” said Holman Leak.
Holman Leak said she understands that CA-51 is a district that is on paper 45% people of color but in reality is even higher (which was recently confirmed by the U.S. Census Bureau) — and she believes those San Diego communities (African, Asian, Latino and Indigenous) deserve representation. Holman Leak is now gearing up for the June 7, 2022, non-partisan primary.
